Default '87 BRAT - worth anything not running?

I've stumbled on this '87 nearby my office. Last registration was in '93, so it was likely parked within a year or two. Story is that is was idling at the store down the street and started blowing white smoke typical of headgasket failure. He brought it back to his house and eventually had someone pull the motor, do the gaskets and it was started back up and still blew smoke. He said that he was frustrated at then point and just parked it. It is mostly complete as pictured - no jump seats though. I wonder if it would be worth a few hundred to take apart for a parts car/winter project. I don't know if any parts would have any value to make back what it would cost me up front. I love seeing a BRAT so I had to snap some pictures. Any input is welcomed...
I can't seem to get pics to load directly on page so please see link.

Contact the DMV and try to calculate the registration back fees. 20 years of DMV back fees would probably cost more than what the vehicle could be worth.

buy it, restore the body & inside & drop a 2.5 STI swap in it. Brats are really rare & hard to find. my moms friend had one when i was a kid & i wanted the car so bad lol.

I don't think "real" states do that. I believe it's only Californistan. I know that in my state, if it's not on the road, there is no tax. Here, we have to turn in our license plates (again, I believe that's every state but Californistan).....to cancel the registration and insurance. It doesn't stay with the car.

^That's what I was thinking. I've never heard of paying back fees to the DMV. Stupid californians.

Might be worth pulling the carpet up and seeing how much of the floor is missing 1st...growing algae is not a good sign.

If its rusty its likely only good for parts.

If its NOT rusty. Buy it and restore it. But you will have to go over the whole car top to bottom to get it running right. (like old fuel in the fuel system is likely gummed up by now)

He wants $500 for it. I would offer $200 at most. I would consider getting it and tearing it down, but I have no shop space and live in a packed yuppie neighborhood with no space right now. If anyone has interest in it I will be glad to pass along his information.

From the looks of it, the body seems to be in pretty good shape.

I would have no problem paying $500 for something like this.

I bought my BRAT in much worse condition. Not running, rusty body for $600. But it does have the original EA81 with only 66,000 miles on it. Sorted out the mechanicals, and now I drive it everyday. I'm slowly working on restoring the body/frame. Right now it is just a rolling project that I DD.

The numbnuts who parked it there probably ruined the floor and any suspension bits that were any good.
I've resurrected many old soobs, but this is one I would pass on.

There's a lively niche market for parts off those cars. See if you can talk him down to $200's or $300's and part it out.

doing the HG on the engine and selling it would probably pay for itself.

If you do end up buying it and want to part it out, I have a laundry list of crap I need for my brat.

Well, throw out some names of parts, and what your are willing to pay. Perhaps we can persuade this person to purchase.

I need about $50 worth of interior parts as well.
