OMGHi2U My Dashcam setup in a 2012 Impreza 2.0i

I installed a dashcam last week in my 2012 Impreza 2.0i 5 door. I was using a GoPro Hero2 mounted on the rearview mirror arm but decided to get a dedicated setup. I did internet research for a week and found out that the leading manufacturers of these type dashcams come from Korea, China, and Taiwan. The Chinese, and Taiwanese dashcams are easily knocked off and chances are you might get a fake camera, So I decided to get a Korean brand.

I chose the Pittasoft Blackvue DR500GW-HD. You can get an accessory that you hardwire into your fusebox that will cut off power to the camera if it's about to drain your battery or you set a timer to turn it off. I chose to wire thru the center console and use the provided cigarette adapter. When you turn off your car the dascham turns off.

It records 1080p, 156 degree diagonal viewing angle, Wi-Fi enabled, GPS enabled, 3-axis acceleration sensor. You can use a smartphone or tablet app to access the video files, do a live view, and to configure/setup. It doesn't come with a video out or screen so this comes in handy to frame your view when you adhere it to the windshield. The manufacturer also gives firmware updates, which I actually updated this weekend.

Here are some pics:

The video quality is 1080p but it can be pixelated from time to time. Don't expect DSLR video or true camcorder quality from this dashcam or from a majority of dashcams. The quality is good enough for me, but if you want to use this dashcam for other types of filming I would skip it and use a DSLR or GoPro. The sensor maybe decent, but the lens is cheap. This is why a 16 megapixel point and shoot camera will not look as good as a 8 megapixel DSLR with a semi decent lens. It's the lens that makes a good camera, not the sensor.

I have Amazon Prime and this was available for purchase thru it. I got it for $302 but it was from Amazon.com and not thru the Amazon marketplace. You can find this exact dashcam closer too $260, if you buy it thru another vender on Amazon.

I actually am a Mac user myself and you can view it thru a Mac, but unfortunately you can not update the firmware thru a Mac. I've read on other forums you can update it thru a Mac, but it's a few extra steps. I also have an old laptop (Windows XP) that I used to update the firmware. It worked fine.

I didn't feel the need for a screen. The only time I would need to see a live view is when I installed it on my windshield. Even if it didn't have the live preview from the app, the angle of view is so wide, it's not hard to line it up. Also, most of the dashcams with a screen take up more space. I wanted the most inconspicuous dashcam when it comes to seeing from the drivers seat. With it mounted in front of the rear view mirror, you don't see it all when driving. Another thing, most dashcams that do have a screen are made in China or Taiwan and those are notorious for being copied and faked so you really don't know if your dashcam is legit or if it's really the one you bought.

95% of electronics are made in china or taiwan anyways.

For anyone curious, this site has tons of information, including ebay sellers and online locations to get 1080p cameras much cheaper than $300.

I picked up my DVR-027 for $50 and it does 1080p video. The viewing screen is nice if you ever had to show the video without a computer, such as at the scene of an accident.

Dashcamtalk.com's forum is very helpful. This is where I did some research too. There are plenty of dashcams under $300 even under $50. I just liked what the $300 dashcam offered. The form factor, firmware updates, reputable company (Someone from Blackvue is even on the dashcamtalk.com forum), comes with an Iphone and Android App, microSD card with card reader was included, build quality, harder to knock off, etc.

Also, the apps come with a viewer so if you do need to view the videos at the scene of an accident, it's still doable.

I thinking of getting the G1W-C. Will probably order tonight. If I like it, I'll buy a couple more for the other 2 cars.
