Default Experiment: 2-Cycle Oil (TC-W3) as fuel additive

Add 2-cycle TC-W3 rated oil to the fuel in a 640:1 ratio (1oz per 5gal).

Possible benefits:

-Lubricate fuel system components
-Improve fuel economy
-Clean/lubricate rings
-Reduce start-up wear
-Reduce engine oil consumption and contamination
-Improve engine smoothness
-Mitigate the effects of ethanol
-Lubricate valve stems

As seen in this thread at ls1forums:
http://www.ls1.com/forums/f48/been-testing-oil-91206/

Posters in the LS1 thread claim it may take several tanks before any effect is noticed, but many there seem pleased with the results.

Any participants, please run at least three treated tanks before voting in the poll.

FAQ summarized from the above thread:

Q: Where do I put the oil?
A: In the fuel tank.

Q: Will this damage the O2 sensors or catalytic converters?
A: No.

Q: Will this affect the octane rating of the fuel?
A: No.

Q: Will this foul my spark plugs?
A: No.

Q: Does it matter if the oil is synthetic?
A: No, but it must be TC-W3 rated.

I look forward to seeing what any experimenters have to say. I debated added TC-W3 or MMO to the fuel back in February and went with MMO. They both appear to be good for the benfits listed above but I felt the designed purpose of MMO made it safer to use. Seven months later, I still add 3oz every half tank.

1qt stabil bottle works great as a dispenser. Trying it in all 3 cars, the motorcycle and the lawnmower.

Small update:

My lawnmower (1994 Toro self propelled, original engine (4 stroke), still starts on 1 pull :-), but also has electric start so pull start very rarely) idles with less surging and while mowing the surging that was always there has noticeably smoothed out.

May have to try this in my car, as well as the various ATVs and mowers my family has as well.

Nice. I can't really use my mower for testing since I've been putting a full strength 2C mix through it to avoid keeping two types of fuel around.

*like*

Oh, i forgot to post I also put this in my motorcycle and went for a ride yesterday, 1 hour. In that time I rode at my usually speeds (60-65) where there is usually a noticeable buzz in the handlebars and if i ride long enough my hands usually feel like they are still buzzing afterwards.....not yesterday

Noticed 1 other thing, the hanging idle my motorcycle has been notorious for is gone too. That alone is worth continued use for me.

I also got 46mpg from yesterday and today, which is better than normal especially with 1/2 the tank ethanol.

What brand did you use out of curiosity?

Resolute. I have no idea who makes it, bought it from a farm & fleet store.

The last tank I put through the mower was 87E0 + 2CO @ 640:1. This engine would regularly misfire on a cold idle on dry E87E10 and doesn't any longer, so I'm not sure if it's due to the 2CO or the E0.

The Impreza definitely likes 87E0 + 2CO. A lot of the PZEV stumbling has gone away, but again, not sure if due to E0 or 2CO.

got my gallon from wally world, they have a 2 stroke syringe for 3 bucks, get one of those makes it easy to pull out the oz that you need. filled both cars with gas and added tcw 3 to the mix, its was pretty cold this am so we shall see how the car responds over the next few weeks.

filled up the buick today, normally on my commute it gets an average of 26mpg, todays fill was 27.2!!!! about the same as if i run 91 instead of 87 in it. $$$$ wise it is much cheaper to add the TC-W3. time will tell if it is a fluke or not. on average when the weather is nice the buick gets driven 75% of the time

Subaru will get filled this upcoming weekend, possibly twice as we are taking a weekend trip, so i will know more on that one then.

Is there a preferred brand of TC-W3 that we should get, or would any brand pretty much be OK?

How stable are the readings in your Buick, typically?

I might try going off the 2CO once we're well into winter blend to see if the mileage takes a hit, but like you, I like what I'm seeing so far.

I'm curious to see what it does for oil consumption. I have accurate drain measurements to compare against.

25.2-26.7mpg, been that way for 3 years now. Used to get closer to 30, never been able to figure out why it dropped, but when it did it has remained where it is at now.

the link in the OP said a lot of people just used walmart's SuperTech. as long as it is TC-W3 rated it shouldn't matter. cheaper the better IMHO on this one.

A new high score on the commute:

This is towards the end of the first treated tank. Average speed was 40 MPH.

i ended up driving the Subaru today more than I planned so I needed to fill up, of the 323 miles on the tank, 290 were with TC-W3. I also had 160 miles into a 20-25mph headwind at speeds 72-85.

all in all I'm impressed, i was expecting sub-30, and averaged 30.8mpg

Started the 2co today in my impreza and in my Tahoe ( 2 vehicles I've been driving most). Taking the impreza to Colorado next week, will use the whole trip and see what we end up with.

I started the 2CO today in my 96 Ford Ranger. It seemed to be a smoother idle and just better overall. I'm gonna putlt some in my Impreza on my next fill up.
