So I have heard to find the closest year to the swap you are doing makes it easier.....a '96 Impreza for you
But I would say whatever you find to be the best and lowest price, more or less a non-running shell....Took me about a year to find my car, to say the least. Also considering your front clip has the front body panels and such, you could get something that is wrecked with some minor front/side damage.....

ps- If ya wanna sell the hood w/ scop and vents, and the front bumper...let me know

hmmm
not sure i agree
how much is in common... and how much are you going to swap from the doner car

i would go with 93 it will still require some needed parts like a pedle box for the hydrolic clutch but get it as cheep as possible

i paid 1800 for my 93 w/174k miles .. bought it on ebay i too looked for about 4 months ended up flying to seattle and driving it home 800mi (with a slipping clutch and bad cv joints)

Well, look at it this way. You have a full car, just cut in half. The easiest thing to do although time consuming would be to swap EVERYTHING! Leave it RHD. Just totally strip the shell you decide to use(get it seam welded and painted while your at it) and swap every little bit over. If you unbolt all the crossmembers and the suspension tops as well as any wiring that goes into the cabin you can just lift the old shell off and drop the new one on and then deal with the interior and wiring, but it'll just be reconnecting wires since it's the same. The only problem is that the wiring to the rear may have been cut, but most good places roll the wiring up before cutting. It'll be a pretty genuine STi this way, maybe you can sell it or keep it, whatever.

A bare shell should be around $600 and you say you spent about $8500 on the car, so....DO IT!!

Default closest model year after?

i was under the impression that the model year to share the most parts w/ what you might have would be the nearest year after. note how uk and jdm cars show the slight model year changes @ 1996, yet those same changes didn't show up until mid '97 over here. the 97's here seem to have a mix of the newer hood style and new interior in the same production year.

you may want to check usdm full service manuals first to see what parts over here match your sti.

i can sympathize w/ your search; took me forever to find another gc of the right model year, finally finally found a 2dr, fwd, no abs, no ac. not perfect, but close. happy hunting tony

it really isn't that important to match model year and even then VERY LITTLE MATCHES.

not sure where the model year matching rumor came from ... its just not true ..you could put a 93 WRX motor in a 2004 sti body the tough part is the wireing ...

as you are going to pull most of it out any way espically if you have a tranny like he does..
since you have to basicaly compleaty re do the wireing the only real stickler is the cable speedo .. all cars befor 97 have this and even that isn't that bad
