Further into the wheel well, as in in the tires might rub on the strut.

Further in. The larger the number the further into the wheel well. The lower the number the further out. Offset is mms that the center of the wheel is from the hub. A zero offset, the center of the wheel would be dead center on the hub/brake disc. (More lip) a +38 would mean the center of the wheel is 38 mm off center to the car. A +48 would be 10mms further toward center. It is "offset" from center. This is why different widths with the same offset sit different. Because offset is from center.

Just for reference, the link below is an sti with 18x9 +63. Which is 12mm further in than a 18x9.5 +45 or 9mm further in than a 18x9.5 +48. I don't know how much the strut clearance varies on the GR WRX vs GR Sti but with minimal negative camber I'd guess you'd be ok.

yeah looks like either 0 or positive camber on those pics....NOT safe. not to mention those most likely won't clear coilovers, and guys have difficulty fitting wider tires on the OEM bbs with a "sport" alignment.

realistically, there is such an assortment of wheels in the low to mid 40's that fit without issue, that an offset that high should not be considered.

Are you referring to my +48 or the + 63 he posted?

I don't know which coilovers you're referring to but mine gave me more inner clearance. And the Sti in the link is stock alignment and stock 245/40R18 tires. I personally think a +63 is retarded as well but like I was saying, this was just for reference.

Sidenote: I have seen guys running 18x9.5 +45 with 255/35R18 and -1.5 camber

Coilover shock body is thicker than OEM struts. Not to mention depending on ride height and preload settings, the spring collars can get in the way.

The reason you can gain clearance with coilovers is through the use of camber plates which will actually angle the strut vs the hub (like with bolts).

This is all based purely on how they're setup though.

I have a 2013 WRX and I'm trying to figure out if a set of 225/50/17 Tires on 7-8" wide wheels will fit (stock is 235/45/17). I read the stickies and this thread but I just want to make sure before I spend a couple hundred bucks. It doesn't seem like a huge difference but the calculator I'm using says the tires will fill out the wheel well by an extra 7mm. This should fit, right?

Thanks

sure it'll fit, but a 225/45 would be better.

MY general rule is to stay within 2% of stock, and I have heard many more people use 2% as a guideline.

For a couple reasons. First, if you change tire diameter your speedometer and tachometer will be off by the same amount, and after 2% it starts to be enough to actually be a nuisance.

Secondly, you're changing the car's final drive by the same amount, which will affect cruise RPMs, mileage, and driving behavior.

Finally, if the tires get too small you are losing ground clearance, and if they get too big in diameter you are risking contacting the bodywork.

SO: Generally speaking, if possible, stay within 2% of the factory diameter.

Now, one thing to keep in mind is that the GR/GV WRX and STI cars share the same chassis and bodywork, but the WRX comes with a smaller stock tire than the STI. (WRX = 235/45R17 = 25.3" diameter; STI = 245/40R18 = 25.7" diameter, 1.5% taller.) So you know there's at least 1.5% of headroom on the WRX in terms of up-sizing. I don't think I'd go much taller than that STI tire, though.

ive heard that going with a shorter tire will benefit the wrx owners how is that? is the gearing going to be shorter also resulting in faster acceleration since our gears are much longer than sti?

it will have the same effect of shorter ratio, yes.

Great thread!

I'm planning on going with a spring/shock combo. Possibly Koni Inserts with swift springs, or billstien shocks with swift springs. (STill haven't nailed it down)

I plan to get the suspension dialed in before I make a final wheel choice, but I'm generally curious about enkeis.

I really like the RPF1's

What's the general consensus on wheel size with this wheel on lowered cars? I've seen 17x9 et35 as a common place, but I want to avoid rolling fenders. Would 17x9 or 18x9 (et35) cause any rubbing on the fender with a spring/shock combo if the fenders are not rolled?

Depends on what kind of tires you put on there. I had 245 40 18s on a 18x8.75 et35 had rubbing in the rear.

I did a minor roll and it stopped. Don't be scared about rolling your fenders. Go to a shop that does it right and you will be fine. Make sure they heat the paint and it will all be good I have had no issues with my paint

A 9" ET35 with 245 or 255 tires would almost definitely need at least a light roll in the rear.

I have 18x9.5 et 38 with stock suspension and a rear fender roll, and I have no issues. I've tracked my car @ summit point main(Jefferson circuit) as well I just got home from VIR and had no issues there. I run a 255x35 re11's pretty square set up.

The +48 will sit almost exactly like stock (completely sunken), it's the same width and only 5mm more offset. The +35 will work fine and at least provide some visual offset change.
