Default LED reverse lights, Output testing

Ok so here's what is being tested in a 2008 Impreza hatch.

From left to right, LED tower bulbs, factory halogens, 7w cree leds

I decided to test out the various bulbs available to see what would work best, look good, and give the best output

now for some comparison shots

Led tower left vs stock right

Led Tower left Vs Cree led Right

Cree led left Vs halogen right

Now on their own
Tower led

Halogen

Cree Led

red was to outline for someone who was asking where the beam pattern fell on the ground. which is about 4 feet back from the bumper. there is still plenty of ambient light that is thrown off, but the camera doesn't pick that up. I am about 15-20 feet from the fence

So for those of you wanting to upgrade to led's for the non-yellow look, stay away from the tower bulbs for reverse lamps, clearly they don't work so well in the reflector housing, the cree bulb on the other hand projects the light out. not relying on the reflector at all, it has the greatest output, distance, and clarity.

I can easily get better/ different output shots of the cree bulbs should anyone want?

Well it's pretty obvious which one wins.

I'm also glad you included the comparison shots with two different bulbs, that takes camera settings out of the equation when it comes to these type of pictures.

Where did you get the Cree bulbs?

Thanks! Especially since I don't have a nice camera with all the adjustable settings. I wanted to make sure the camera wouldn't "lie" so I used side by side comparisons.

I got both sets of bulbs of ebay, the tower bulbs where about $4, and the cree where about $13.

Great comparison. The cree leds are great for reverse lights for visibility and safety.

Disappointing is an understatement. Perhaps its the longer length compared to the straight projector style. I have to recheck alignment and maybe rotate it 180 degrees as the bulk of the light seems to be directed at an upward angle out of the light.

I will try to get at least one pic. The output is just weird, almost "streaky" (I was near a short wall so could not appreciate the true awesomeness you see in pic below)

High hopes have been crushed on the rocky coast of reality.

I submitted a return to Amazon, expect I'll be ordering the "just" projector style.

7440 bulb (21 watts)
7441 bulb (27watts)

Gm part number: 15224109

They were a little more than $6/each, but online i was finding good prices for the bulb, not so good for the shipping.

I installed one but I haven't attempted to test the output in a controlled situation. I will try to do so soon and will post pics if i get some.
I am probably going to just add additional lights, since i have a couple options laying around the garage.

I've had the cree bulbs in my past cars and now currently in the WRX as well. Great LED's and really help when reversing. Some pics of my wrx and m3 with the cree LEDS...

I have decided aginst LED's in favor of 65w halogen incandesant bulbs. any led I tried is significantly dimmer than OEM. even cree LED's.

and by that I mean it cant light the area like leds can.

even the 7441 27w incandesant from GM is better.

see my thread.

Got mine from eBay. Just type in Cree 7440 LED Reverse Light into ebay and they will come up.

Just a note from recent experience, my 2011 sedan needs a 921 bulb for the reverse lights, 7440 doesn't fit. Anyone looking for a set of 7440 Cree Q5 reverse bulbs, I've got a set for sale.

The 921 (sedan uses this bulb, not the 7440) Crees are really dim, much worse than stock.

WhatTurboLag?, does the H9 bulb fit right into the reverse light housing in the 2006 WRX?

Be careful. It's entirely possible for you to melt your wiring putting such a high wattage bulb in. And you need to do some custom wiring and soldering and **** anyway. H9s aren't wedge base like the stock reverse light.

Yeah, not plug and play. Here's WhatTurboLag?'s "thread".

Swapped a h9 high beam bulb into my single reverse on my 06 wrx (other side is my rear fog) and it is amazing. Brighter than both stock bulbs or any led ever. I can't even imagine how bright 2 would be!!!

12g power from battery to trunk, then run the relay off the original reverse wires. Worth every penny I (barely) spent!

Yep not PNP. But well worth it!

Don't need to worry about melting the housing unless you back up for like 20 minutes at a time which no one does lol

For the sedan (921's), I haven't found anything that's even as good as stock.
For the hatch, the 7440 cree bulbs seem to work well (at least judging from the pictures in this thread). If you want a set of Cree 7440's I have one I bought before I realized they wouldn't fit. For $10 I'll ship them to you and you can give them a shot. PM me if you're interested.

In my thread did I mention the bulb that GM sells? It's like 27w. I'm running it in my rear fog light. Plug and play
