Default 2003 WRX Axles, Can I save them?

My 03 WRX front CV boots gave out and splattered the underside of the car with cv grease about 100-150 miles ago, since then I've developed VERY tight steering at the outer edges of the wheel's range, almost like my power steering has gone out. I'm assuming this symptom is due to the CV boots but I haven't found any reliable way to verify that online. Anyone have experience here?

Secondly, I've been searching for a reputable place to source OEM rebuilds, but apparently they don't exist in my area so I would really like to rebuild the stocks, is it too late to salvage them? I'm guessing the main concern would be damage to the bearings if they went greaseless for too long? I found some great write-ups so I'm ready to do the rebuild but don't want to waste my time if they're screwed.

How many miles on them? What boots let go? Inner? Outter? Do they have any play front to back?

OEM rebuilds can be had through a dealer.

My dealer doesn't do the OEM rebuilds and says he can't source rebuilt 03 or 02 axles. They have 100k miles on them. How do I check for play? Outer boots went btw.
