Default 08-2011 kenwood navi HU buzz when powered?

I can't find any threads about this here, and only one old on one iwsti without a solution.

I just picked up a 2011 wrx premium with the kenwood navi unit and whenever the unit is powered, there's an audible buzzing/humming sound coming from it. You can hear it a lot better when you hit the eject button and the screen moves down out of the way to expose the CD slots.

Has anyone found the source or a fix for this? The iwsti thread mentions that it's a cooling fan within the HU that is spinning and making the noise, but I was trying to find more info before I rip the dash apart to try and figure out what is going on.

I'll eventually replace the HU, but wasn't planning on tearing into it all until spring.

Thanks,

-- Dave

It's almost certainly the ventilation fan, visible on the rear of the HU. You can try cleaning the blades, but you may end up needing to replace it. It is 12V, approximately 29 mm square. Sorry, I don't have any other specifics about the size or model.

It could just be a misplaced wire that's touching the blades.

Figured.

I'll dig up a howto and see about taking the HU out of the dash.

Replacement fans are easy.

Thanks,

I agree it's probably the fan. It may not be something touching the blades or dirt - it might be the bushing/bearing going. A lot of cheap fans have crummy bearings. Sometimes you can help them along a bit by carefully removing the sticker over the center and oiling it, but you're better off just to rip it out and replace it... pick something up with ball bearings or, better yet, magnetic fluid bearings.

Anyone got a link to do that? Mine is making the noise and I'm not sure where to go get a new one.

Edit: type in the code on the fan and stores pop up that sell it.

I probably wouldn't buy the same fan... as previously mentioned, there are better bearing designs, and thats likely what I'd go for.

Info on the fan:

Brand Name:
shicoh

Model Number:
Icfan F3010EB-12UCV

Voltage:
12V

Current:
0.14A

It's a 30x30x10mm 2-wire fan

I've purchased a direct replacement and two other cheaper (to ship) varieties... will see how things work out.

The fan that is in there can be disassembled/lubed, but it doesn't look like the oil I used was thin enough and the fan burnt out after 20 mins once reinstalled =P

It's two screws, the fan is external to the unit, so no disassembly required.

Only thing you might need is a pair of tweezers to plug the new fan in, since the connector is about 1" inside the unit.

I played with the fan some more and it didn't burn out, the bearing on it is just that shot. I fed it a bit more voltage and it still spins just fine.

I sent you an email a few days ago... have you received it?

Thanks,

You may be able to get away with just removing the fan. I used to run an older kenwwood navi unit and the noise drove me nuts so I just removed it. I was running external amps so the the HU amp was disabled. Either way go to mouser and use the menus to drill down to the correct fan.

My actual replacement fan showed up today, so I installed it and surprisingly, it's nearly as loud as the old one, so swapping fans to the exact same one won't help.

It's hard to find 12v fans in that size, I wasn't sure if it was actually outputting 12v, so I tried a 5v fan and it just spun up to hairdryer levels of noise, so I'm pretty sure it's a 12v feed from the HU on those pins.

After a few days of break-in the fan is a bit quieter now, so I guess it is better. I certainly don't notice it as much.

Gosh, to think Kenwood would pick up their game for this.
