Default $50 Gauge overlay for 02-06 WRX

For a while now I've been pretty disgusted at the green glow from my factory gauge cluster. Something had to be done and the DIY route never seems to come out that well.

I came across these while browsing ebay last week.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/01-07-Subaru...aa8e8c&vxp=mtr

I ordered them up and they arrived at my door three days later. Being just an overlay with It's own light source the install took about 30 minutes. I tapped into the radio dimmer for power and the same harness for ground.

Here's the end product.

Still need to red out the hvac controls

If only this company made a completely red set.

I really like the look! How did you get the stock overlay off?

The stock overlay stays intact. I used some scotch poster tape to keep the new overlay down. It's thin enough not to impede needle operation. The manufacturer says the bezel is enough but I'm skeptical. I've done a few overlay installs in the past in this manner and they've held up so far.

Also there's another more expensive variant. I wanted to go this route but they're $110.

There is a 140mph 9000rpm variant in blue and red

The cheap one looks better than the overly busy expensive one.

If I ever get rid of my jdm cluster, I might pick one up.

This can't fit 01-07. 02-03 has the speedo in the middle and tach on the right, while 04+ has the tach in the middle and speedo on the right. Seems this will ONLY fit 02-03.

I wanted to remark again after I drove with these for a while.

The speed markers are on 100% (Measured with my GPS).

Traditionally we have 55 and 75 mph speedometers here in the US to suit our common speed limits. I was thrown off a little bit by the 60 and 80 mph markers on these gauges. Overall I feel this is a subtle difference and will only take a little while to become accustomed to. So far I absolutely love these.

Does anyone think you would be able to put a stage gel behind these to change the color like other people do with the stock cluster? I really want to change the color of mine and if it can be done with these overlays without messing with the stock ones that would be awesome.

Not bad for less than $50.
Is it backlit? It looks like all of the warning lights come through no problem.

Middle console was easy. There's no green tint on the hvac controls. Just picked some up some bulb condoms from amazon to replace the existing ones.

The gauge overlays are in fact self lit. The only warning light not showing through properly is the oil indicator.

Here's a closeup day pic

I saw these a while back and wondered how they would look. Thanks for doing this. You made up my mind

you're right about that. Looks like you would have to trim this one to separate the tach and speedo.

I coulda swore I saw this one for an 04 a while back...but now can't find it.

I used this exact same overlay in my 02 last year. Was a bit of a pain to get on, but it's been running great.

It is developing some cold spots (Spots where the light isn't as bright) but it's not very noticeable.

yea I'm pissed I can't find one for the +04's. I really hate the dim green display and do not want take mine apart and take the green film off. Also that way seems to have more uneven bright spots

You could not cut them apart to fit because the lighting system for that panel is on 1 wire for the 2 gauge faces.

Yeah after I said that I was looking at it more and realized it probably wouldn't work.

Plus I believe the middle display for our cars are bigger then right display. So the tach off this cluster face for an 04 would be too small and the speedo would be to big.
