Default Key fob won't work, please help.

So I got off work today and went out to my car to leave. The key fob wouldn't lock/unlock any doors! If i unlock it using my key, the alarm goes off and I can't start it. After somebody at the mill finally let me borrow their vehicle, I made the 45 mi round trip home and grabbed my other set of keys. That fob wouldn't work either, so now my car is dead in the water at work. If anybody could shed any light on what might be wrong, I'd really appreciate it. My car is a 2006 wrx TR, with what I believe to be the factory alarm. Thanks!

I have heard about issues like that before. I actually think i saw a thread on here about somebody having a similar issue. The problem was either the ECU or the immobilizer module.

This is a really easy fix- you're key fob batteries probably just went dead and you can usually pick them up over the counter at your local subaru dealership for like $8.

In the interim, when you need to get back into your car after its been locked here's what you do.

1. open the door quickly and hop into the drivers seat
2. insert keys into the ignition
3. click the key forward (2nd click i believe, before the click that would turn the motor over) and back three times and your alarm will turn off and allow you to start your car as normal.

It's still annoying b/c half the time the alarm begins to go off in the middle of turning your keys but at least you can lock/unlock and drive your car. Hope this helps in the future!

I've had fob issues with mine. But it's all in the fob and not the car. I had replaced the battery at Interstate Battery shop for like $2. I found that I still had issues though. I kept pressing it and pressing it till the car finally unlocked.

Being worn out with this issue I opened it up again and took a look at it. Everything seemed ok and I re-seated the battery. It has worked fine ever since.

Check yours out and see what you can find.

Thank you guys for the help. Just about to head back to work to pick up the car. The dealership said the same thing about cycling the key, but they said they may need to reprogram the fob's, which would be free anyway. In the mean time, I'll replace the batteries and see if this helps. Thanks again.

you might be able to find re-programming instruction at www.cars101.com - not sure about an 06 though.

Regardless of whether his batteries are dead (or its out of sync with the car)in the fob or not. Its still just a keyless entry and the alarm should not go off when he unlocks with the key. Also the fob has nothing to do with starting the car, the immobilizer chip in the key must be malfunctioning. Otherwise, what's the sense in having a key if you can't use it.

Sounds to me like an Immobilizer issue or ecu like Taras said.

No, its functioning as it is supposed to. If you open the door using the key (not fob) it doesn't recognize that the doors have been unlocked, and obviously if a locked door is opened, there's something wrong and the alarm is triggered. If the alarm is triggered, so is the immobilizer.

I can vouch for the key-cycling. My wife refuses to carry the fob for my car, so every time she drives it she sets the alarm off and cycles the key.

I've heard, but not tried yet, if you unlock the door with the key, open and quickly close it, and then cycle the key lock on the door a few times it will also disable the alarm.

So, I finally picked up the car, and the fob worked. I almost wish it didn't, because now I'm really uneasy about using the fob.

I didn't use my fob for a while when it was acting up. Just use the power locks when you're getting out. When you close the door, the car will let you know all doors (including the trunk) are closed and locked.

Default Does anyone know how this problem was fixed??

Hi,

I'm having similar problems, both of my remotes works intermittently, sometimes it stops working for a week at a time. I brought it to the subaru dealer and they couldn't reprogram the fob. Any suggestions? I've changed the batteries in both of the remotes, and it doesn't make any difference. The remote strength is strong.

PLEASE HELP!

I find that my key fob works better if I am further away from the car. If I am right next to it, it can take several tries for the door to unlock.

Your 2013 Dodge Caliber is still under warranty. Go to the dealer and get it fixed for free.
