Default Stupid wild animals

I had to swerve to avoid a wild burro in the road and ended up smashing my bumper into a rock and scraping my doors against some brush. I'll try and get some pictures uploaded when I get the chance.

EDIT: Got some photos uploaded

Did you notice the burro flipping you off as you slid by?

I'm down in Arizona visiting family. Otherwise it would be something like a deer.

next time hit the thing and make an insurance claim. If you swerve off the road to avoid it and hit something, the damage is on you because you drove off the road and hit a stationary object. But if the thing you hit was mobile, then it's covered by your comprehensive.

I already put the claim into my insurance, from what I'm told I'm covered through my collision coverage. My biggest concern is driving it 18 hours back from Arizona to Washington.

collision coverage is great but it still goes against your premiums. Maybe it's really cheap where you live... Up until a year ago, my insurance rates would have doubled if I made a claim on my collision (raising my annual rate to $3000 from $1500) plus my deductible for 3 years. This was apparently because I was under 25 years old with less than 10 years driving experience... However if it was covered by my comprehensive, my rates would stay the same and I would only have to pay my deductible which is also cheaper than my collision deductible.

Holy crap!

Just make sure that radiator isn't cracked and no leaking fluids. I'd try and tape off as much as possible so the wind doesn't try and tear something off in the mean time on your way back?

So you are saying you had to swerve to avoid an ass in the road? Only one? I see hundreds every day around Atlanta. I'm glad you are OK.

Haha, I usually have to deal with a few commuting to Portland every day. But I'm fine, kicking myself got letting it happen the way it did, but the car is fixable.

Hitting a wild animal is Comprehensive in most states and won't ding you points and your rates. Avoiding the animal and causing damage is Collision and will cost you.

Good luck!

This reminds me of my deer run in. Driving a back road up here in canaduh i almost hit a deer with my mgb GT doing about 120km/h (85mph) i dont know what the deer was thinking but he superman'd the bitch and jumped clean over the car. I swerved and the intercooler ate a couple bushes. All i had luckily was some leaves, deer piss on the roof and **** on my seat to clean afterwards. Hitting the animal could have been much worse for you and the car. Glad your well.

Thanks! If I had to choose taking out an animal bigger than me or risking some scrapes in the brush I would take the brush scrapes. There are some big black asses out here in the desert.

So I'm meeting with a claims adjuster on Friday to have the car looked at. If it was just the bumper I wouldn't have too much of a problem, but that bar underneath the radiator is bent to hell and pushed the radiator upward into the bar up top so my hood doesn't shut completely.

all the signs out there say "Watch for Burro" and on the way to Arizona my fiancee actually said she saw the cutest black burros. The entire time we were with her parents her father and I would not shut up about how she "liked the black asses the best"

Rescheduled my appointment with the claims adjuster to earlier today, and so far his estimate says about $3200 for a repair. Now I just need to settle on a repair shop and get the car in.

Super bogus. No matter how much you try to justify driving fast on public roads with skill, you can never account for the random occurrences.

About 3 months ago I was on my way back from my girlfriends house at 3 in the morning on hwy 150 (ojai santa paula rd, google it) in Ojai Ca, and got hit… BY a deer, 80mph in an S turn. I've never been so startled in my life. I had purchased s-drives 2 weeks prior and the mold release crap was finally gone. The deer busted my headlight, quarter panel, front and rear passenger doors and hooked an antler between the rear wheel well strip and the door (prying the panel 2" down away from the door).

My insurance quoted me 3k in damage but being young and ignorant, I opted for 1k deductible when I opened the policy thinking the lower yearly premium would be more worth it. Luckily I only have 3k left on the loan. Think I'm going to pay off the car and have my insurance make the check payable to me, and fix it myself.

Since then I have gotten my car (04 wrx wagon) down to 2820 lbs and increased my speed on that road by about 5 mph. I figure next time I'll outrun that bastard. Good luck fixing your car. But remember it could have been worse… You could have hit some human ass and gone to prison for 10 years

Yeah, I wasn't even up to the speed limit when the incident happened. I was going on a beer run and just got onto the highway. When I looked at my speed I was doing about 35. Next thing I know some big black ass is sprinting across the road.

It could always be worse, and you always look back and think to yourself how you could have saved it. I try not to dwell on these things and just think about how I'm glad I have insurance
