Thanks for holding his hand. I guess a detailed post, by model year, with bullet points was not clear enough

I figured this out with years ago using far less concise info from others who had done this swap well before me.

Right now, your best bet is to get an old 02-05 WRX 3.54 r160 and put the car together. Gather up the parts you need to either do a complete swap or swap in some hybrid axles.

If you go the r180/ hybrid axle route follow the advice in the above post. Driveshaft Shop was considering making some budget r180/ wrx hub axles a while ago nut i dunno whether they ever did.

Earlier today I replied to Sneaky's advice but it has not posted yet. Thanks for clearly explaining it Sneaky.

I get it now. Appreciate the hand holding thing.

Maybe it was my mistake I did not clearly explain that I already had all of the parts from a 2006 STI (except brakes/rotors) so I didn't want to toss out the components I already had like the R180 rear diff/drive shafts/etc.

Also, I wanted to keep my existing WRX R160 Hub/Brake/Wheel set up.

Super Dave's write up on the races was excellent reading and I will go that route. It looks like an easy task to make up my own hybrid axles for under $200 as opposed to around $1k for custom axles.

BTW - It was really special to log in and see your kind responses. There just aren't many kind, caring & patient people like you around anymore.

Thanks again for everyone's help. It truly will make the swap go so much easier.

I've learned today if it ain't broke don't fix it.. Me spending nearly 6k for this stupid swap is just as much as I paid for that pos out in my driveway. I think if it goes on me then I'm just gonna get what I always wanted. A 240 or civic

Did you plug in the speed sensor?

If so try swapping in the speed sensor from your wrx tranny.

Did you clear the code after the swap? If so, how long after clearing it did the code reappear?

If immediately, did you look into your wire harness connectors to make sure you didn't bend or break off any pins?

Also look for any wire harness damage or loose connections.

Just my 2 cents - look for the usual suspects.

Question about the information about the 2004 STi trans... We have a wrx in the shop, with a 2004 STi trans, automatic driveshaft, and r160 rear (3.54 ratio) according to the information given, that shouldn't work?? Is the information correct, because it's working here.

How long has it been "working"? USDM parts? Unless the 2004 DCCD unit was swapped to a 2006-07 DCCD unit, which I highly doubt. That vintage USDM 6MT requires a 3.90 rear diff.
**So was this more so a post (in the tech section) to garner advertisement rather than resolve your question?**

V - ohh yea that could be a possibility too. Don't ID the rear diff mearly by the external markings.

Betcha they swapped the ring and pinion. Did you crack the rear diff open and confirm its ratio.

Hey boys finally getting around to doing the rear diff and hub swap from a 05 Sti into my bugeye to match the 05 6 speed I put in.

Got a line on some 07 Sti struts front and back, I know the knuckles will mount to the struts but what I cant remember if the top hats will line right up?

I thought they would without changing the tophats!

But cant find any info on the super sticky and it doesn't really apply to us who are swapping hubs anywho.

School a brotha! So I can rock this out.

If anyone needs some axle stubs for this swap. I have a set less than 5000 miles literally. I am going R180 and hubs so I have no use for them.

Suberdaves races WON'T work for the 2006 WRX. So much for trust and sweet detailed "but wrong" layout. Redundant questions help to clarify where some people are ASSuming they know what the facts are.

People who don't want to bother with helping others should put a cork in it and not jump down others throats. Just let patient members help out as opposed to you slamming those who need questions answered.

TO ALL who have a 2006 WRX and want to keep their rear wheels, rotors, brakes, etc. you will need hybrid axles. Suberdave can help you. Just ask him. He is great.

02-03 WRX
- 3.54 rear diff and female front axles

EASIEST SWAP (6MT ONLY)
- 06-07 6 speed
- All Shifter components from 6MT
- Axle stubs and seals
- OR 05-07 WRX male front axles (make sure these axles have the correct spline count to fit in your hubs!!)
- Auto Impreza driveshaft
OR STI driveshaft and R180 companion flange for r160 (my preference)
- STI clutch, flywheel, pressure plate
- OR reuse your complete 5MT setup

EASY (6MT ONLY)
- 05 6 speed
- All Shifter components from 6MT
- 05-07 WRX male front axles
- Auto Impreza driveshaft
- OR STI driveshaft and R180 companion flange for r160
- STI clutch, flywheel, pressure plate
- OR reuse your complete 5MT setup

STILL EASY (6MT ONLY)
- 04 6 speed
- All Shifter components from 6MT
- Keep your female front axles as long as 6MT has stubs in it still. Just make sure the inner splies match as I have heard of issues with different size stubs. I prefer male axles and 05+ trans
- OR 05-07 WRX male front axles
- Auto Impreza driveshaft
- OR STI driveshaft and R180 companion flange for r160
- STI clutch, flywheel, pressure plate
- OR reuse your complete 5MT setup

SEMI-COMPLETE (6MT and R180)
- Any year 6MT and appropriate front Axles
- Shifter assembly
- STI Driveshaft
- STI clutch, flywheel, pressure plate
- OR reuse your complete 5MT setup
- R180 that matches 6MT (3.90 for 04-05 and 3.54 for 06-07)
- Legacy Spec-B rear axles with YOUR WRX Outer-CV swapped onto the the Spec-B axles (There is a thread on this, search for Spec B) (EXPENSIVE)
- SuperDave custom inner CV race and STI axles to mix/match the WRX and STI CV assembly so R180 works with WRX hubs (possible outer spline count issues
- DSS rear axles (PRICEY)
- Keep your hubs/knuckles, wheels, and brakes

COMPLETE (6MT, R180, Brembos, Wheels, etc) THIS GOES FOR 02-07 WRX

- 04-07 6MT with matching ratio R180 (3.90 for 04-05 and 3.54 for 06-07)
- Shifter assembly
- STI Driveshaft
- STI front and rear axles (Male or female fronts that match your year 6MT)
- All hubs/knuckles
- 5x114 wheels unless you get an 04 STI or JDM 5x100 setup
- Reuse your front and rear control arms, as they are the same length, unless you want the added front caster and aluminum arm upgrades.
- Brembos with rotors. Brake lines are the same, although it is a good time for an upgrade
- OR 4/2 Pots (they bolt up to STI hubs) with rear rotors that fit the larger STi e-brake assembly, and 5x114 lug pattern if you go 05-07. Look for "gravel rotors" as this is a common swap in the rally world where STIs use 15 and 16" wheels.
- Front struts for 05-07 as the bolt holes are farther apart. 04 can reuse WRX suspension IIRC. Rear struts bolt up the same.

04-05 WRX

Same as 02-03 with the following exceptions:

- Male front axles on 05, possible 04.

06-07 WRX

Same as earlier WRX with following exceptions:

- Definitely has male front axles. Perfect for use with 05-07 6MT
- 3.70 final drive, so you have to swap your rear diff regardless of the year 6MT you go with.
- Has a push type clutch. Earlier WRX and ALL STI have a pull type clutch, so you will need to swap your clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, slave cylinder and clutch line regardless which 6MT you go with.

EASIEST SWAP (6MT ONLY)
- 06-07 6 speed
- 02-05 WRX R160 with 3.54 ratio
- All Shifter components from 6MT
- Keep your front axles
- Auto Impreza driveshaft
- OR STI driveshaft and R180 companion flange for r160 (my preference)
- STI clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, slave cylinder and clutch line

EASY (6MT ONLY)
- 05 6 speed
- 99+ Impreza R160 with 3.90 ratio (Google SPDA Transmission Chart for a list of applicable donor vehicles)
- All Shifter components from 6MT
- Keep your front axles
- Auto Impreza driveshaft
- OR STI driveshaft and R180 companion flange for r160
- STI clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, slave cylinder and clutch line

STILL EASY (6MT ONLY)

- SuperDave custom inner CV race and STI axles to mix/match the WRX and STI CV assembly so R180 works with WRX hubs (possible outer cpline count issues)
- DSS rear axles (PRICEY)
- Keep your hubs/knuckles, wheels, and brakes

COMPLETE (6MT, R180, Brembos, Wheels, etc) THIS GOES FOR 02-07 WRX

- 04-07 6MT with matching ratio R180 (3.90 for 04-05 and 3.54 for 06-07)
- Shifter assembly
- STI Driveshaft

I'm not sure if it was mentioned in this thread but I think if you get an old Type 1 R160 (late 80s to mid 90s i think) you can run SVX axles which fit the R180 rear hubs.

Please tell me if I'm wrong.

oooooook, so after reading 80% of this thread... I'm going to post a question because there's so much damn info, I can't process it.

I have an 07 wrx... I want to put an sti trans in it... To my understanding, if I were to pick up ANY year of sti trans (currently looking at an 09), I would need the following.

- Trans...

- sti clutch+flywheel+slave (because I have a push type, and ALL sits are pull type? this sucks because my clutch is new)

- sti shifter linkage

- R180 of the correct ratio (I plan on doing stuff that would roast an r160)

- Auto driveshaft or sti driveshaft

- 04 sti rear hubs + wheel bearings + seals to press into my wrx rear knuckles. ( I have too many sets of 5x100 wheels, and I would just like to still be able to use them) THIS IS MY MAIN CONCERN.

- 04 sti rear axles....

- Some sort of DCCD controller.

I can reuse my front axles, assuming the trans has female plugs.

I can use my clutch master cylinder.

Thank you, and awesome thread btw.

If im not mistaken I heard the 07 sti swap is the most desired and easiest especially considering u have an 07. Is you lug patter 5x114? And you do not need the DCCD unless you plan to dyno it ever.
