Default 1998 EJ22... interference or non-interfence?

1998 Subaru Impreza L
EJ22 ... 2.2 L 4 cylinder aluminum alloy 16 valve SOHC boxer engine

Is my engine interfence or non-interfence? I have heard both... EJ22's from 1997 on, are interference? All SOHC EJ22's are non-interference?

Thanks for any help!

The ej22 engines used hydraulic adjusters up through 96 I believe, then in 97 they introduced solid lifters...and hense the ZERO clearance engine...

unfortunitly you have yourself a ZERO clearance motor.... be sure to change your timing belt

I would venture that engine will bend valves as well. Both the HLA and solid rocker ej22 will.

i thought that the dual port ej22 was non-interference and the single port was interference.

I would always error to the side of caution here, keep up on your maintenece and call your dealer or trusted mechanic if you are unsure, it is a very costly thing to find out the hard way.

That's the simplified version of the way I see it. I worked on dual port ej22 that skipped teeth. Changed the tensioner and threw a new belt on it and away it went.

Looking at lots of conflicting information on many of these subaru forums... Found a gates timing belt guide that says 98 legacy 2.2's are non interference.

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

This.

1997+ SOHC motors became interference. The 1997+ SOHC motors with the solid valvetrain and the single port exhaust are interference.

The earlier non-interference SOHC EJ22s with the hydraulic valvetrain and dual port exhaust were offered until 1996.

I know this thread is pretty damn old but the link worked for me, so let me say something.

That catalog is very inaccurate as it has marked the 1997-1998 2.2 SOHC marked as non-interference which is false.

It also has a DOHC motor marked as non-interference which is false as well. All 4 cylinder DOHC Subaru motors are interference.

It also has only marked a few of the motors as having timing belt driven water pumps, which is inaccurate as well, because any Subaru with a timing belt has the water pump driven by the timing belt.
