Default Kia GT4 Stinger Concept

Quote:
Kia faithful will immediately notice the latest iteration of the signature grille resting mere inches from the ground. The surround glows white and is flanked by vertical LED headlamps. Front-brake cooling vents funnel air around custom 20-inch wheels. A carbon fiber front splitter mounted below the bumper provides added downforce for the car and keeps the GT4 Stinger's front tires firmly planted to the tarmac.

Under the hood you ask? A turbocharged 2.0-liter that pumps 315 horsepower to the rear wheels.

Looks cool, but KIA still stands for Killed In Action.

Concept car is concept car (a.k.a. ridiculous), though the GTR's roof line that has since spread to the vette, 370, zagato, and now this car is one of the worst looking design trends on it's own currently.

The A-pillar would not see production.

Agree, lose that side noise.

For me, fix the front end (I hate their corporate grill and the rest is pure concept) and we'll talk, because the overall shape and specs look tasty.

PMO-EA Collaboration WorkShop - The Project Approval and Execution Process Re-Evaluation

By David Undercoffler
January 13, 2014, 12:15 p.m.

With high performance a major theme of the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Kia threw its hat into the go-fast ring Monday by debuting the GT4 Stinger Concept.

The tidy, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe boasts a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and quirky styling that could tease the look of future Kia products.

“It’s an authentic 2+2 sports car that can turn heads as a daily driver while also being right at home on the track,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer at Kia Design Center America. “It’s about purity, simplicity and timelessness.”

PHOTOS: Kia's GT4 Stinger concept

The GT4 Stinger concept is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 315 horsepower. Power flows through a six-speed manual transmission to 20-inch rear wheels that are wrapped around 15-inch Brembo brake calipers.

Weight has been kept low at just under 2,900 pounds for this 2+2 coupe (two main seats and two smaller seats in the back). The car was designed in Kia’s Irvine, Calif. studio.

Kia says it currently has no plans to put this concept into production, stating only that “the GT4 Stinger provides a possible and highly provocative glimpse into Kia’s future.”

Yet the pieces are all there in the corporate parts bin Kia shares with its sister Korean brand, Hyundai. Grab the rear-wheel-drive platform that underpins the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and retune that car’s 274-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and you have an excellent starting point for Kia to get into the performance car realm for the first time.
it says, RWD, but I don't see a drive shaft in the rear shot with a reflection. Maybe I am just missing it.

It seems to be just a really early concept car, like that red FT86 concept shell. An awesome interior (that will look nothing like production), and some awesome styling queues (again.. not making it to production) that will ultimately go from

to this

Which will be fine, but lose some of the cooler characteristics such as those tail lights ending up as they did.

All in all, fine and understandable. The real delivery issues will be on the proposed power and weight targets. It seems manufacturers are always overzealous with those kind of claims and then drop dead by production. I really wish someone would overestimate weight and underestimate power for once.

Build it. The automotive world can always use a cool 2-door, RWD coupe. Allows more choices when it's time to go looking for one in a few years.

Great find, I'm liking it! The koreans put out great stuff and seem to be willing to step in where japan has sadly left. I'm going to have a tough time if more news breaks on the RX-7 and this car come fall. The mustang is looking great, but man the coupe segment is getting back into it right now.

One thing I'll never have to be worried about is the koreans being behind the curve in tech, even if they're still learning with it :P.
