Default Might be purchasing a BRZ

So I'm thinking about jumping into a 2014 BRZ. I usually do a bunch of forum research before going to look at a car but I'm having a hard time finding technical info, is this the only place on NASIOC dedicated to the BRZ/MOTOR?

Google is your friend.

I'm also looking at the BRZ, but I'm not sure if I'll ultimately make a move on this make, or the 4th generation WRX (after it's had a few years to "settle down"). And regardless of which vehicle I end up going with, it'd be Canadian spec.

This is the dedicated BRZ sub-forum. I doubt there's much conversation about this powertrain in the "OEM NA powertrain" sub-forum.

That's a big clincher right there. I think the BRZ is a major head-turner and just fun to drive. If you want more confidence in your driving, though, AWD is awesome. BRZ has "that drama" from the rear that not everyone's accustomed to having.

So what technical info do you need to make a more informed decision?

Are there any major problems I should be concerned with? What kind of quirky things if any have you guys seen?

I don't plan on modding at first but I'm sure I would eventually want to do some small bolt ons, coming from the turbo side I know tuning is a must but I didn't see much of that on the BRZ side. I guess the modding questions can wait until I actually decide if buy one first...I guess my main concerns are any complaints you guys have since you've purchased.

DI seals popping due to aggressive shifts - poor stock tune, earlier vehicles only allegedly.
Leaky rear taillight gaskets - pretty common
Windows freezing in place - poor inner weather seal/door skin design - all models affected
2ng gear rough in cold - very common
Various gear grinds - synchro problems, not common
Typical Subaru rattles - common
Rattle from rear deck - allegedly fixed in production
Weak axles - repeated hard launches can destroy the bearing races

Good luck, and hope whichever one you purchase, you get maximum enjoyment from it.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the 4th generation Impreza / WRX styling, but I've yet to test drive it, and honestly, if the handling is as good as they say it is, I could be made to ignore the styling.

...although I've also yet to test drive the BRZ, and if its handing is as good as they say it is, I might not bother to wait for the WRX.

Not much wait for the WRX. And I'd rather go with the STI. NEVER going back to the WRX. Burned too bad.

There's engine chirp, window freezing issues (won't roll back up without a quick manual reset), and taillight condensation as the MAIN problems. The other stuff I view as minor or haven't affected me yet. However, there's also rough idle that I almost forgot about. Some people's cars will already be started and will suddenly drop RPM and either almost die or sometimes die. My car will sometimes have a hard time turning after I press the push start button. It's odd, but not terrible.

I play my music all the time or rev my engine too much to be bothered with rattles.

I occasionally have odd starting/cranking issues, occasional rough/wandering idle/dip thing, and now that's cold I've heard a pop or two on start-up every so often - this last one seems to happen more or less only in winter.

I'm also looking for a BRZ/FR-S. Good know the issues people are having. I've actually already moved forward on one and have confirmed a purchase through an ebay auction, I won.

Soon, very soon.

Threadstarter, Cards2323, could you possibly help me on this? The ebay seller claims to be a dealer in NY. If you could look that up in anyway, that would help me very much. Or maybe who to call so that I can look it up. I don't know. Any help is appreciated.

Great info, thanks guys....

Ive owned a Subaru before so the rattles and rough shifts dont really concern me.

Does this "idle/chirp" issue get fixed with a dealer ECU reflash or do you just ignore it since it doesnt really effect anything? This is really the only item I saw that I would really be worried about.

The chirp is partially a tuning issue on early models and partially related to the high pressure fuel pump for the DI system. Mine hasn't gotten that yet. As to the idle issue it goes away on mine as soon as I drive a few feet. Had heard a pop or two just after startup on Monday, but it was around 0F at the time.

Chirp gets fixed with a new pump that may/not develop the chirp. I only hear it when I'm stopped with the music low enough. Cosmetic issue IMO - doesn't concern me enough to have a dealer possibly **** up installing the HPFP.

Almost an exhaust backfire sound of sorts. Assuming it was just a cold engine and the vehicle DI system trying to get temp up. Car was sitting in a 0F garage and hadn't been started for two days.

The "pop" sound is the sound you'll hear right before your engine decides it doesn't want DI seals and then you'll have to 'splain yourself to the dealership about why you need a new engine under warranty.

I think a lot of these were addressed in the 2014 models at least according to a few guys I know that work at Subaru. I suppose I will find out as I just purchased one on Sunday! WOOHOO...

I just picked up a 14 BRZ before new years and I must say I'm so in love with it. I will agree with some comments above one being 2nd gear being a real PIA when its cold but it gets better, I do have some condensation in the taillights but its cold out and its not much at the moment. I'll see if it clears up soon but I have no qualms about taking it back to the dealership and saying, Fix this S. I got the 6 year 80k extended warranty so I'll be back often as things aren't right. But so far I'm only 500 miles in after 9 days so I want to at least get past break in and be able to get on it to see what other issues I may have before I go back and start complaining to only have to go back again.

But I've had a 04, 06 and 08 STI (the 06 was my favorite the 08 was the worst for road feel to me) but the BRZ so far, is refreshing and fun even being stuck below 4k RPMs.

I have not followed the 4k thing... more techs say drive it like your going to drive it... I don't drive it hard though cold i keep it under 4k till it reaches temp then I drive it like want... I don't red line it though. I had to take mine into the dealer today to get a new brake light ordered .. the one int he back window has come apart and they couldn't fix it so that will be in monday.

Eh. A pop or two on startup is suspicious - but the seals are done when they pop under load, which I have never experienced. That said, I betcha when I get around to supercharging this thing that the engine blows.

Congrats! Are you really going to keep all three? I'd let the Impreza 2.5i go.
