Default Anyone going to the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona?

I just got an email from Audi about the Rolex 24 at Daytona Jan 25-26. I see some people here follow it and was thinking about making the trip down. I see there are still a few hotels with rooms. I just picked up my WRX and has been garaged with around 250 miles on it at the moment. Looks to be a 16 hour drive from CT. I figured it'd be a good way to break the car in a bit . I typically watched every ALMS race and Grand Am race. Went to Texas this year and have been to every race in Lime Rock Park.

Anyone else going to attend Daytona?

We'll be in a rented RV outside turn 1.

I'm still up in the air. I may end up going solo since no one around me wants to make the trip.

I'll be making my 10th trip down from the Boston area and will be working in the pits throughout the weekend. There are a lot of inexpensive hotels right on the beach. Looking forward to it, hopefully we get more beautiful weather down there.

uhhh fly. 16hr drive plus the 24hr then back in the car for another 16hr. You better be young and energetic if you want that to be a fun time.

Pete and I will be flying down from Boston Friday to catch the end of the conti race and get settled in for the 24. This will me my 3rd year in a row. Definitely the most anticipated rolex 24 in a long time with the merger happening. Really excited to see the balance of performance - or lack there of.

I'm considering flying. I wouldn't just drive down for the race. I would have driven earlier in the week and stayed later. The thought was there with having a brand new car, lol.

I really think this will be a great race with both series together. I'm doing my searching now for flight/hotel and rental. I had a lot of fun in Austin. My parents used to go to Daytona when they were young and always told me I had to get down there for some races.

Make sure to come harass me Saturday morning. I'm usually bored out of my mind the morning of the 24.

Will do. How'd your guys do at the vir13hr? We saw you set up a few spots down pit road from us. It was just pete and I driving so we barely had time to sit down during the day. Was hoping to say hello.

It seemed like we had a better day than you guys did at VIR, or maybe it was just that you couldn't go very far on fuel. Not only were we the fastest of the ITS cars, but we were also the only one without any problems. Our group of old COMSCC people did well. We ended up winning by 19 laps.

Well done!

We managed 60 minute stints with the oem tank. Then we crapped out with 2 hrs left. It was a cool experience.

Not that I've seen here for this weekend, but there are usually a few for the 24. We've had one in our pits the last 3 years during the race.

Its been kinda hard to follow who's doing what. I was on IMSA trying to see who's running what times. It would be nice if there was some reporting and summary of the practices.

I think I'm going to make a solo trip down. I think I'll have a better time if I can wander around and meet new people.

They don't have to run the transponders for practice...so most strategically don't.

We'll have a crew of 6 there for the race the woman and I will be there on Wednesday.

Does anyone happen to know if IMSA has any forums, either for fans or teams? I'm interested in getting in contact with a few teams.

This has changed over the last couple of years. All cars on track at all IMSA sanctioned tests are required to have working transponders.

As far as I can tell, no. There is still a little bit of activity on the Grand-Am forums, but there are not any official IMSA message boards.

We'll be there again. Inside Geico camping area, should have a large pole with a Subaru flag up. Anyone from Nasioc is welcome to stop by and say hey. I will have my Sonic Yellow wagon there.

Kfoote, your name is Kevin right? You are still with Turner? Would love to stop by and just say hey at some point. I only ask your name so I am not the goof that says, ugghhh, is Kfoote here? Good luck this year, always loved the Turner cars, and the Turner girls aren't too shabby either. LOL

Yes and yes, though asking for kfoote to anyone on the team will get you properly directed to me. We are down to 2 Kevins right now, but there have been as many as 4 on the team in recent years.

The best time to catch me pretty much all season is late Saturday morning before the race starts. I'm usually bored out of my mind then. I'm not sure exactly where I'll be, but there is an extremely good chance that I'll be found wherever all of our wheels and tires are.

I'm flying down Friday night to see my first Rolex 24 race. My friend is taking photos for Forgeline so I'll be helping him during the race then riding back to Ohio with him Monday.

What are the best places to watch the race usually? Also, how many fans actually try to watch the entire race? We have a hotel about 5 miles away but I want to watch as much night racing as possible.

kfoote, I'll try find ya to say hi Saturday morning

The Forgeline people are good peeps. We do run them on the GS cars, and we will run them on the GTD car once they can make them for us. Dave will be able to point you in our general direction.

At some point, I recommend going to the grandstands just after start finish. You can see most of the track from there, and a lot of the action happens in turn 1. The International Horeshsoe is also a good viewing spot, and the kink is the one spot where you can get an idea of how fast the cars are through the corners.

Not many. If you are there at night, sometime around 2:00-4:00 AM, I recommend taking a walk through the garage area to watch the teams working (hopefully not us). What goes on there can be just as interesting as what is happening on track.
