Is it just me, or does this car seem to be a bit of a problem child for Subaru?

Not really. Overall, the 2012+ Impreza has been very reliable:

There just seems to be lots of random little issues. None of which SOA is overly trying to fix.

You wouldn't feel so bad if you had previously owned a VW TDI or GTI. Trust me, our reliability issues just don't compare. And if you think SOA is indifferent, then you've never dealt with VWoA.

Mine has been having trouble starting in cold temperatures too. After the second or third try it fires up.

How cold are you talking about?

It is well known that the OEM battery provided in our cars is disappointingly weak in terms of Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). Some people on this forum are replacing the OEM battery proactively, and not waiting for it to fail.

My car (and OEM battery) is 1.5 years old with 23k miles on it. It hasn't failed to start my car yet, but it does crank slowly when it gets cold. I'm hoping it makes it through this winter, but we'll have to wait and see. I would hate to replace it this early, but will if necessary.

Indeed. The stock battery is iffy at best below freezing. I'm trying to nurture it through this winter, but a new one is in it's future.

Block heater helps immensely

-28C ( -18F ) this morning, turned over within a couple of seconds.

Everything was cold (even the shocks), a block heater or a battery warmer might have helped a bit, but there seems to be nothing inherently wrong with the model.

Mine is two years old (and Canadian).

Meh, if/when I determine that my OEM battery is inadequate, I'll install a Diehard Platinum battery and be done with it.

^^^ this. People expect to have to just turn the key to START and have it fire within a second. No, you keep the key turned until it kicks over, sometimes for up to 10 seconds (per the owners manual).

Quote:
Do not operate the starter motor continuously for more than 10 seconds. If the engine fails to start after operating the starter for 5 to 10 seconds, wait for 10 seconds or more before trying again.
Admittedly, many cars today do only require one to turn to START and immediately release and the computer takes care of the rest. My G8 was like that.... all you had to do was turn the key to START and release the key, the computer then took over the rest to start the car.

No Subarus are like that. You have to hold the key and crank it until it starts and then release.

Even at -25f it helps a lot more than just the battery. But if you don't see this kind of temps it is moot point

Default Hard start on 2012 Impreza

I am having the same issue. Periodically the car will turn over for a long time before starting. No ryme or reason as to why. Happens in warm weather or cold. Does not matter if car was sitting all night or just started. This is obviously a common problem. My 13 year old honda civic seems to be more reliable when it comes to starting.

Keep your foot off the gas pedal when starting the car otherwise it will be hard to start.

My foot has never touched the gas pedal when starting. That has no effect in this. Next.

First post here.

I've had a wee bit of rough starting, but otherwise has actually been pretty reliable even at -29.

From what I understand the FB20 engines have tighter tolerances and incur more friction on start.

That and yeah... would like to replace the battery some time

Welcome to the forum.

I'm sure the FB20 has tight tolerances, as does any modern engine that is designed to use 0W-20 oil. But I'm not aware of the FB20 having more friction on start-up than any other modern engine. Why would that be? Because of the boxer design?

Maybe. I always thought it was because of the tighter tolerances of the engine, but yes, if that's so then all 0W20 engines ought to be rough to start... Though maybe Subaru's engines are just 'extra tight' ha ha ha.

Default software update for hard start

Brought my 2012 Impreza to the dealership. They seemed aware of the issue. They said there was a software update. No charge under warranty. Hopefully this is resolved now.

UPDATE: Problem continues even on warm days. Completely random, sometimes starts fine, other times not.

I'm gonna have them check for it when I go in for inspection this week. Did you have to tell them anything in particular, or did they tell you? I have the factory code info saved..

So this happened to me the other day for the first time after 2 years and 43000 miles. It actually happened twice in one day. It took about 7-8 seconds of continuous cranking for the engine to turn over. At first I thought maybe it was because of the cold temperatures, but there have been a ton of super cold days this year and it didn't do it during those other days. Anyone find a fix for this issue yet or what causes it?

Update: Just happened again when I tried to start my car a minute ago.

Update. Problem persists with hard start at random. Update did not help. This is not just on cold days.
