You get my vote! Lived in Woodbridge, then Stafford from '98 to '03 and my commute was up to Dulles. I wasn't tracking mpg's back then but it had to be dreadful. Back then gas in the area was $1.20 gal for 87. We'll never see those days again.

Yup. Dems were da days... That commute sounds dreadful, my current one is nowhere near that bad. My company has a contract with ATPCO, so every once in a while I have to go to Dulles for work. I love being able to go there toll-free.

Current tank has the computer reading 30 mpgs @140 miles. Hopefully I can keep it up!!

This tank seems to be better, because of better weather (ie. less usage of windshield vent). Traffic is still teh suck, though.

I had mine finishing off after 3/4 tank at around 34 average on my on-board readout. The +32 temps required very little initial startup warming, and I wasn't in much traffic. Not too bad. Been running strictly 93 for a month now. 95% being running Shell.

Subzero temps and 30-40mph headwind. Current average on this tank is 28, gonna drop like a rock on my drive to work this morning

Although I'm sure I'm not dealing with temps as low as you, mine has gone in the toilet as I take advantage of the remote start on a regular basis. (24/25 at the moment.) AFIC, a small price to pay and worth it.

Agreed. We dropped back to 0 yesterday, and it won't be above freezing for at least another week.

My mileage has gone from 30 range average to 25 range average due to extensive startup idling. But oh well. lol

I'm so over this winter, was doing 32-33mpg, down to 27-28 on my commute. I'm really beginning to dislike that temp display on the dash, as it goes down so does my mileage.

Yep, I feel good to keep it above 22mpg with my commute. I take it out on the highway 1-2 days a week to keep the oil in better shape and warm it up really well.

My car didn't even have time for the temp display to stop falling this morning. I left my garage ~15F, by time I got to work it read 0F, but when I looked at the weather station at work, it was at -7F...

Today's fill up shows a calculated 34.35 MPG avg. on (3rd? tank) E087 octane gas. 352.0 miles on trip odo readout and 10.245 gallons into the tank until the fuel dispenser auto shutoff. Not bad, IMO.

Interesting observation last night.
I was scanning my wife's car because we have been having some issues with the rear O2 on her 2006 VW Jetta 2.5, primarily due to full saps oil which isn't great for emissions. Anyway, the Jetta commands 14.7:1 -15:1 afr. The compression on that engine is less than ours(9.5:1), so the 87 octane recommendation makes a lot of sense.

Our cars are running 10.5:1, which historically is premium octane category, but I think to compensate our computer is commanding a 14:1 afr, which is actually rich, probably to help keep the temps down to control the detonation.

I think a proper tune for 91, would more than offset the extra cost for premium, we would get slightly better performance and better mpg. It's a win win. Gonna have to look into that tactrix cable.

It also pulls timing to avoid detonation. I am also very surprised at our CR we can run low octane.

It's all the tune; low timing, rich fuel, probably something else. It really explains why we take a 20-30% mpg hit in the cold as compared to other cars. The jetta only takes about a 15% hit to mpg.

I suppose the factory tune is set to run 87 because the average driver doesn't want to pay for premium on a technically economy car. They don't consider that the extra 15% cost is probably for a reason even though it isn't turbo. So subaru just tuned it for 87, and it is a very conservative tune to protect the engine, probably more conservative than average

I just might have to look into a tune next winter, I will be close to my 60k by then anyway. (50-55k I'm guessing)

^Maybe that lends more credence to that Aussie shop that has a tune for our cars? I will def. be looking into that as well, all though it'd be 2 years until I get close to the 60k warranty (currently at 29k)

The ECU is also in control of the throttle, so it probably can limit dynamic compression by limiting the throttle angle.

Yup. I'm ok with running premium if the car is tuned for it.

Ya, that too. Drive by wire and all.

Main point is I think subaru really limited performance by deciding to require 87 instead of 91. I honestly think the mpg and overall driveability would be better if it was tuned for the proper fuel.

Thus why I can't wait until there's a tuning option available for us. I think it could really open this car up and fix these issues we have. The car is tuned far too conservatively.

I'm already running premium (94 octane, zero ethanol), and am much happier for it.

For the extra 10-12% in cost, I'm getting (on average) about 15-20% less fuel consumption (yay, less fill-ups for the same distance), and my butt dyno is telling me that the car seems to have more oomph climbing hills and starting from a dead stop (would that be torque-related?) than it did with the 87 octane, "up to 10%" ethanol crud I initially started running it with.

I'm certain that the reduced fuel consumption is primarily due to the zero ethanol aspect of it, although I suspect (and I'm not a mechanical engineer, so I don't know) the better kick from the powertrain is due to the higher octane fuel.

Personally, I'd like to find a way to tune the transmission (CVT), so that it won't constantly hover at 2k rpm. In the meantime, I suppose I could use the paddles to flap my way to roadway bliss.

Side note: stupid politicians and their stupid "green" policies. Whoever decided that mandating 10% ethanol in our fuel here in Canada should be shot. Burning ethanol should be saved for bar tricks or race cars that are tuned for it, not for daily driver vehicles.

Ya, that and the AVCS are how they control DCR and allow the SCR we have to use low octane. A couple of tanks of higher octane and NoE and this car seems much happier. I would bet if we had a good 91 tune, nothing too edgy it would change everybody's outlook on these. I bet you could get 20 hp or so out of these if tuned. I'm thinking, like you guys have mentioned, that these are way limited. I prob won't do it as mine are used for work, and I would like to grab a WRX. But I think the potential is there for sure.
