Question 2005 Baja Turbo (5spd) Exhaust Q's!

Long time WRX owner here, but first time Baja owner as of last week!
First off, i'm love-love-loooooving the Baja... I had a Miata for a short while (regrettably :P ) and there's NOTHING like getting back to Boxer Boost after nearly a 2 year hiatus!

So i've already started to map out and install some Baja Turbo upgrades and i have a couple of minor questions:

1) IIRC the 2005 STi has a catless uppipe, my question is since i'm pretty sure the 2005 Baja Turbo shares so many STi parts/engine bits, that perhaps the Baja uppipe is already catless as well? Anyway I can verify w/o pulling stuff apart? Wasn't sure if the OEM heatshields would block the cat from being visible. EDIT: So upon further searching confirmed the Baja Turbo has a catted uppipe... drats! The search begins for Bosal/STi OEM...

2) I get that most downpipes for WRX/STi will work... That shouldn't be too hard as long as i stick to 2002-2007 WRX/STi bits right?

3) Catbacks/Midpipe... Here's where I start to get confused. I understand the Baja is longer obviously and thus the exhaust hangers are prob a bit different compared to an STi. How massive are these differences? I know that the Xcelleration turboback is bolt on, but is it possible to grab a decent STi turboback, and with minor modding/welding, make it fit the Baja?

4) Headers! This is cake i'm pretty sure, but basically any EQL (keeping the boxer rumble) header for a 2.5L engine/oil pan should bolt right in, correct?

5) This isn't really an exhaust question, but throwing it out there for the Baja Gurus, but does anyone know if there are fender braces that'll fit the Baja Turbo?

Thanks for all your advice/assistance and can't wait to get this Baja beefed up!

You want to know what works on a baja check out my fabrication page. www.putphoto.com/sti2nr

There are no fender braces. I had to weld some in and they did nothing that I noticed like on an STI where it is a night and day difference.

Keep the stock headers unless you are going with a bigger turbo.

As far as exhaust you can buy a full turboback exhaust on ebay for around 200-300 shipped and modify it to fit the baja with a couple of exhaust extension pieces from autozones exhaust section.

I hope you have a good welder and know how to use it.

Let the fun begin.

Niiiiiice fabrication page!
Yeah thinking i'll stay stock-ish headers, would like to go to the Grimmspeed route and get their x-pipe / coating / PnP / etc. as that setup has been great on my WRX. Turbo i've been debating about a 16G-XT or similar, see no reason why to go larger as this is still my daily / hiking vehicle.

And yeah, keeps looking more and more like i'm going to need some custom welding done eventually with some of the things i have in mind

Def appreciate the helpful advice though!

I'm also curious about exhausts. I'm looking for just a catless downpipe that will fit an 05 baja turbo and vf39. I was hoping to pick up an inexpensive used invidia or another common brand but I'm not sure. I'm also looking for a stock STi up pipe.

I have the HKS flanged downpipe. It fits perfect and was reasonably priced brand new. There's a brace on the firewall that some people have had to notch, this one clears that with out an issue.

I'm always dubious of super cheap exhaust parts. Aren't they prone to breaking under the extreme heat? I suppose when the time comes I'll link my purchase options here and see if anyone has any opinion on them. My plans are find a used STi up pipe, a cheap catless downpipe, boost control solenoid, STi TMIC and a tune. I figure that's as cheap as it gets to get some good power with a tune.

So I've checked ebay and found a bunch of downpipes, some as low as $40 shipped wow. So I mean it really seems too good to be true. Also, how can these 3 inch downpipes fit the stock turbo and 2.5 inch Baja mid pipes or am I missing something?

I have a welder so if something doesn't fit I make it fit. The 40 dollar ebay downpipe I have is still going strong 3 years and 36k miles later. No issues. Most of the time you pay for the name.
