Well, I quantified the impact of E-85 being banned next year. Ron re-tuned my car for 92 octane today, and the car now has 216whp and 270wtq (-8whp and -25wtq versus the E-85 tune).
Still not bad power numbers, and the curves stayed pretty much the same, but the reduced torque coming out of corners is noticeable. Quote:

Looking into wheel options for next year; its time to get off the Drags. Kinda looking in the RPF-1 price range.
Probably just going to have to bite the bullet on the looks part of this, and start looking for RPF-1s. Maybe a used set of OZ Ultraleggeras... Last edited by UWMechEngr; 11-26-2013 at 02:03 PM. |

What about the TSW nurburgring. I looked at them when i was buying wheels. Similar weight as the RPF-1 and use the same technology. They are also different in the looks department from some of the other wheels you looked at. What about the NT03-M? A little more spendy but not outrageous.
I'm with you on the RPF-1 though. Not super keen on the look but they are light for the cost and are readily available. FYI you can get Discount Tire to price match them to an add online. I got them for $180 each and didnt have to deal with shipping. |

For reference my current 17x8 Drag DR38 wheels are pretty close to 19lbs each. |

I totally understand. I was doing the same thing earlier this year. The only "reasonably" affordable that's lighter is the ssr type c which are .5 lb lighter than the rpf-1 but cost twice as much.

Well I ended up getting a set of used RPF1s in black.
Things I have waiting in the wings right now:
The only other thing I want to do is replace the brake rotors with DBA t3 4000, and maybe try out Carbotech AX6 pads (or something other than the HP+). Still a couple months until the first events in my region. |

Also keep in mind that plastidip isn't very heat resistant. I've seen it get baked onto wheels from brake heat.
I was wondering if you had picked them up. I think they will look good in black but something bright would be fun too. Maybe a bright teal or blue would be cool. You could also have then powder coated at chrome or have them polished. On a side note, how happy have you been with your RCE T2's as far as autox and daily driving duties? Would you recommend them or go with something else? I understand there is always a compromise between the two. And for everyone else, what are your recommendations for suspension set ups? Mainly Coilovers/spring and strut combo. I have 24mm f/r adjustable sway bars with end links and am running the appropriate sized wheel and tire combo for stx. I sold the stance gr+plus pro coilover I ran for 3 seasons and put a fair number of miles on. They were fine from a daily standpoint when I was driving 80ish miles per week but am now driving 250+ miles on crappier roads and they were too harsh and clunky. They came with 5k/7k springs. They were appropriate for the budget at the time but I would like something that performs better/rides better/and is better quality. Lastly I don't want inverted struts. They were a PITA to adjust damping on. I tend to like a neutral car with a slight lean towards oversteer (the holy grail I know). Sorry for the mini novel. |

I've been generally happy with the T2s. They're not...bad for my daily driving. Though keep in mind they're double adjustable, with bump being on the bottom, so it is a bit of a pain to adjust with the wheels on sometimes. Though for the money I spent on used ones (~1500) I sometimes think I should have spent the extra $400 to get a groundcontrol setup, and work with them on the spring rates.

Nick, if you're looking for brakes... would you be interested in going to Girodisc with me to see if they would fab up a 2-piece rotor that would fit the 06/07 4-pots? I was originally going to go by myself, but if there is a market for this...

Any word on the Girodisc conversation? I've got an 02 WRX but am running the 06/07 4pot setup on it and would be very interested in hearing about pricing on a set of rotors.

Success
Rota slipstream, 13.5 lbs. 15x8 5x114.3 et40, now also 5x100 on a 2002 WRX wagon. Looking forward to see how this will do on an autox.
Offset is almost perfect as well. |

why not just run a 17x8 rfp1? Only about 2 lbs more and 2" larger for less tire sidewall and less sidewall roll. Trying to go lowest cost option?

Going for shorter gearing and natural lowering without affecting RC and camber gain negatively. Also including the tire, the weight difference to 17x8 RFP1s is over 5 lbs.
This is mainly for local competition and our courses tend to be dragstrips between tight corners, kind of the way the east course was in Lincoln last year, except our site is also very bumpy (one more reason to reduce unsprung weight). From past experience better gearing goes a long way there. Going from 18" to 17" was an instant average full second on an RX8, pretty much the same was true for a Mazda 3 going from 16" to 15". We also ran 225s, 245s and 255s on our DS WRX last year and we settled on the 245s, but the other two sizes weren't really much slower, just different. Lower overall cost might just be a great bonus on top of it. Last edited by Emanuel; 03-03-2014 at 10:50 AM. Reason: grammar |

That's what I was wondering ^^^. Of the "tires to have" the largest size available is a 225/45/R15 BFG Rival. You can get a 245/40/R15 in Hoosier A6 but that obviously isn't a stx legal tire.

Not yet. But there are three choices of 225/45 15 and surprisingly there isn't all that much less rubber on the ground. We tested it last year and found the 245s faster then the 255s on the 2013 WRX. We did run SS Z1 225/45 17 tires for the first event, but the car wasn't prepped at all (no alignment, shocks, sway bars, lightweight wheels) and while we still won the class I think we failed to truly give the tires a chance.
However later in the year a friend of mine put 225/45 17 RS on his STR car and drove pretty much identical times as on his usual 255 setup. It is pretty much like Andy Hollis describes it, you can't overtire on street tires the way it is possible on R comps, at least not yet. So the wheel width is a much more limiting factor than the tire width. One thing I'm a little concerned about is the tires overheating too fast. I will start out with Rivals and most likely switch to RS3s in the summer. Here some pictures of 245/40 17 Rivals on a 17x8 RFP1 and a 225/45 15 Rival and a 15x7.5 Rota slipstream wheel. Well, it's definitely something I don't think any stx wrx has tried before. Taking that setup to any tours/nats?

I guess it depends on how it will work out. If it turns out I was terribly mistaken, no. However if it turns out it's working pretty well, I will at least be at the Peru Match tour.
