Default Looking for independent Subaru repair in CT.

Looking for independent Subaru repair near Simsbury, CT. Does anyone have a good reputable repair shop, or a guy who can fix a Legacy GT in that general area? I think its a blown turbo.

Replying to an old thread here - but does anyone know of an independent Subaru repair shop in CT east of the river? Maybe around the Glastonbury or Norwich area?

We have a 1998 Subaru Outback which most likely has a head gasket leak.

Thanks.

I bring my cars (04 f150, 05 wrx) to Accurate Auto in norwalk. they are a busy shop so they dont jerk you around on price or try to rope you into other work and have never had a bad experience with them

Question

I'm hoping to update this thread for 2014 as I need a reliable and honest mechanic in CT for the dreaded head gasket change on my 2002 Forester. The car is still very drivable and I can get it anywhere in the state (or neighboring states if really worth it). Does anyone have someone they can recommend that isn't already listed in the thread? Or any updates on any of the shops that are?

Many thanks.

East Granby Motors does good work - but they are really not a performance based shop - they are better for general maintenance or non-turbo Subarus - (Rider51 - they would be a perfect fit for your issue) - FYI though they are a small shop and can be hard to get a in touch with sometimes.

ECS Performance is where I had my Turbo repaired and they are much better shop for performance work or Turbo Issues - much more in tune with Turbo Subarus and can even do tuning as well as parts source for performance upgrades.

This is a pretty common job that should be done successfully by many mechanics. If you're willing to travel to get it done right and at a good price go to Wicked Innovation in southern NH. ECS should be avoided IME if you want a timely repair and honest accounting.

Quoted from a fellow east-granbian.

East granby motors has a knowledgeable staff and have been dealing with subarus, and only subarus for year. Mike, the owner is a great guy.

I have personally used ECS and they are a great honest group of guys and Cullen, the guy you will talk to on the phone or go in to set up an appointment knows his stuff. Either of these places will be a good option.

Theres also EFI further south.

Thanks for the updates. I ended up taking my Subaru to Pipa Auto Garage on Newfield Street in Middletown after getting a verbal recommendation. It's basically one guy (Walter) who works mostly on Toyota, Honda and Subarus, but other cars as well. It's only been a couple weeks, so I can't completely say how well his work holds up, but I will give him a big, big credit for being honest. Once he looked at my car he told me I had two oil leaks, a major one from the gasket around the filter seal, and the head gasket itself was actually a very small leak. To change it now wasn't necessary, but something I should keep an eye on. So the guy could have potentially bilked me for much more money than he did.

Bringing this one up to the top again -- in case there are any other opinions anyone could add.

We have a '95 Legacy that needs an assessment, and repairs, that we'd like to have done by a specialist, rather than a general garage.

We're in New Haven, CT, but are OK traveling some distance (within the 100mi AAA+ radius ) to get it into the right hands. Our local shop has served us well so far, but the current problem calls for a higher level of specific knowledge and, we suspect, the ability to source a suitable replacement engine in a reasonable timeframe. We don't need a performance shop, just someone who knows the basic setup well and can be trusted for efficient and professional work, and has access to parts if necessary.

It seems like East Granby Motors is the top good candidate, although most of what is written about them refers to their reputation as a dealer, not a repair shop. Does anyone have experience to speak particularly to their repair business, or a reference for another specialist in the general area? A place called WrenchRite Automotive, just a few miles away in Branford CT, also advertises as a Subaru specialist, but I have not been able to read much of a reputation for their operation. They would be much more convenient in terms of location, so if someone has had experience with them, I'm all ears; but we won't hesitate to make the longer trip to East Granby (or elsewhere) if that seems like the smartest option.

Many thanks in advance.

Anyway, that’s just an interesting digression; regardless of how the forum members’ (perhaps justifiably) unfriendly responses are viewed, the discussion did not reflect well on the shop owner, who said a number of dumb and unprofessional things. In the absence of any other information about this business, I would probably stay clear of it on the basis of the owner’s comments there. I’d still be interested in hearing if anyone has actually met him or worked with him, since it didn’t seem like any of the commenters in that thread actually had -- but I'd need to see some very positive firsthand endorsements, and I haven't really found any firsthand experiences with him at all so far. Which is why we started off assuming we would probably be more comfortable working with a different shop, even though WrenchRite’s location is very convenient.

So – any more thoughts on this? Sound right to steer towards East Granby Motors? Anyone actually used WrenchRite and care to comment on the experience?

Eh go down and talk to the guy at wrenchrite, I work down the street and a few months ago I stopped in to see about getting a part time deal there to bring home a few bucks in top of my 9-5. He seemed like a good dude, he's the kinda guy that'll chat about your car and not rush you in and out trying to take your money. You don't have anything to lose going down and getting a quote, if you don't like what you see or hear you can always leave lol.

for a blown turbo, any repair shop should be able to take off an replace a few bolts within an hour-hour and a half. its really not that hard of a swap, all you need is a few hand tools and maybe a jack.
