aftermarket navigation in 2015 WRX
Has anyone done it? I want to get a new WRX with factory nav, HK, and push start but it must be ordered. I'm thinking of just getting a limited model and do the nav after market. Any insight in where the GPS receiver would be mounted? Could it be combined with existing shark fin antenna? Or would it be another bulky unit mounted on my windshield? I've seen kits that supposedly retains functionality of the steering wheel controls... Any one have experience with this and can share insights and pics?

Page 1 has the panel taken off, page 2 has the full installed Pioneer AVIC-x940BT. I have a similar unit in my '11 (AVIC-x9310BT) and the GPS antenna is just a small little black magnetic cube that I stuck to the top of the radio and sits inside the dash. No bulky unit to mount to the windshield. You can retain SWCs with a PAC or Axxess module. Not sure if they support the new 2015 yet, but should shortly. |

Yes. Here's what you need:
1. Receiver (duh) 2. http://www.amazon.com/ASWC-1-Universal-Steering-Control-Interface/dp/B00B4PJC9K module for steering wheel controls 3. Harness - 3 options: - Get the Metra 72-7552 and splice into factory harness for SWC wires and Vehicle Speed Signal wire (Pins 4, 13, 14, 19 in the picture shown here), or - Get 2 Metra 72-7552 harnesses and hack 4 wires from one to the other into slots 4, 13, 14, 19 so as to avoid messing with the factory harness, or - Get a hold of SVXdc and his 20-pin harness, which would be plug-n-play and also avoids messing with the factory harness. I believe he also sells the Metra ASWC-1 and the factory USB adapter 4. http://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-8905B-Installation-2012-Up-Vehicles/dp/B00DIFO1GI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1398035906&sr=1-1&keywords=metra+95-8905b for Double-Din 5. Optionally, you could also buy the Metra AX-SUBUSB adapter Metra AX-TOYUSB to retain your center console's USB port The GPS receiver can be mounted on a flat area anywhere on the dash or trunk lid for the best possible reception, so the spot you choose really depends on your appetite for running the cable. Personally, I first ran wire to the passenger side right next to the tweeter grill but the supplied metal strip wouldn't stick to the soft touch dash material. So I went with the easier route and mounted it on top of the head unit itself for a stealth/OEM look. I haven't had any problems with reception thus far, even though it is not as ideal as mounting with a clear view to the sky I followed SVXdc (Link - refer to SWC Variation B instructions) and Metra's (Link) wiring and programming instructions for the 2014 Forester XT to correctly hook up the SWC module to the rest of the wiring. The ASWC-1 auto programs all the buttons for you, but assigns other functions to the Push to Talk, Answer and End BT buttons on your steering wheel. You have to change this manually to have them perform BT functions, but it is very easy to do by following Step 8 in the link to the Metra instructions. I mounted the BT microphone in the gauge cluster - less wiring and works better than the stock location IMO. You just need to loosen the right side screw holding the cluster a little to run the wiring straight to the back of the HU through the gap near the trip meter reset: Edit: I've been receiving PMs on the exact mounting location in the gauge cluster. Here's a quick pic: Last edited by BuckiWRX; 04-25-2015 at 11:42 AM. Reason: Added pic of BT mic mounting location |

No changes to the stock reverse camera setup. Still OEM with the MFD display for now. Have other mods to take care of before trying to tackle that one. Hopefully someone does it soon and posts a how-to

Why have you changed the USB adapter from the Subaru version to the Toyota version?

The connector is different from the old impreza wrx. 2015 connector is the same as the one in the brz - toyota style. There is also a toyusb-2 which is not the right type, so check twice before buying |

Thanks man! I had a local shop do it, so I'm not sure. I do know they had issues with the sound so it took most of the day to get working. They ended up getting the volume and up/down buttons working as well as the phone pickup for bluetooth. Really nice guys (I've been using them for all kinds of stuff for years and they are the go-to for the local Subaru dealership). Masters Stereo in Greenville, SC if you want to look them up and call them and ask about specifics.

Finished my install earlier today, it wasn't too difficult. Retained steering wheel controls and such. Ordering the toyota USB harness and should be able to give input soon. [IMG][/IMG]

Finished my install earlier today, retained factory steering controls, not too difficult. Great nav unit so far . Very little lag time, kenwood has come a long way!! I'm quite impressed!

Nice Install
Clean install looks great. Were you able to retain steering wheel controls, and center console USB port? Do you know where they put the GPS Antenna and mic for HU? Did you have parking brake bypass performed?

Did the text naming get retained in the upper dash display (the one with the boost gauge).
Is there anything that didn't work? I'm debating on whether to just swap speakers, or do the headunit as well If everything works, getting a better headunit would be a great option. |

I wired a relay for the parking break bypass, mounted the mic at the top of the drivers side pillar, and the GPS antenna on the dash in front of the pillar by the speaker grille. All steering wheel controls work but I need to reassign the Bluetooth ones, just haven't had time. Ordered the toyota USB adapter and will install when it arrives. When you start the car, it says check audio for about 5 seconds on the upper screen then it goes away, at either use the boost gauge or the mpg anyway because all the other info is on the kenwood. I will not be installing a backup camera because I prefer the oem one.

Seems everyone else is getting the check stereo message on startup after changing out their stereo, I'm not getting that. I also got all the wheel controls working and the phone on/off hook buttons work as well with my ASWC-1

I haven't tried to reassign the Call buttons yet, just haven't had time. Yea it seems as though everyone seems to be getting that message. Strange that you don't, if you happen to find out why by all means let me know!!
