Cool Put OE 12.4" Rotors on your Subaru! - 05 Turbo Legacy Brakes for your Impreza!!

We have completed the first stage of testing with fitting the 2005 Turbo Legacy brakes onto a 2002 WRX. Currently we are running the front 12.4" setup only, but will have the rear vented setup on by this weekend!

Below is a link to photos of the test fit and final install.

2005 Legacy Turbo Brake Upgrade

17" or larger wheels are required for these brakes. These kits will bolt up to any year WRX, Impreza or Legacy, as long as you are on 17" or larger wheels!

The specs:
Stock 2005 Turbo Legacy Front Brakes
12.4" Rotors, Thicker than stock WRX
More Rotor Surface used than stock WRX
2 piston caliper (larger than stock wrx caliper)
Larger Pad Surface
Current Kits with Stock Pads - Bobcats are on the way!

Vented Rear Rotors

To be honest, I have not measured the rears yet, however they should be the same as or larger than the H6 rears. I will know much more about the rears this weekend. I just didn't want to hold back on the info any longer.

From my observations of them on the 05's they look to be, however I will not be 100% on the rears until they arrive tomorrow. Keep an eye on this thread though.

Nice work. They certainly look nice.

Stopping power is still more dependent on your tires. Are these sliding calipers like the OEM WRX brakes? How would you rate these against the STi (non-Brembo) 4-pot set-up? Pads for that upgrade are significantly cheaper than most upgrade set-ups. Any idea on cost for Legacy pads?

IIRC they are floating calipers front and rear....fixed calipers (like the 4 pots) 'feel' better as a result of less compliance in the system.

The whole rear brake looks just like the old turbo legacy but is bigger in diameter.

VERY interseted in the rears so I can fix the front bias cuz of my sti brembo fronts!! Subarubucks for this right??

Nice! Finaly. I have been asking and wondering about this for some time. Glad you took the initiative and are figuring this out. I'll be waiting on the rear info as I am in the same boat as InfamousDX. I was going to do H6's but I will definately wait to see how this pans out.

How does the front 12.4" 2 pot legacy set-up compare to the subaru 4-pot front set-up. For the price you can get the 4 pots for less, but is there are big difference performance wise with the turbo legacy set-up?

The legacy setup has larger diameter rotors (as they require 17in wheels). Larger rotors with more mass, so better brake modulation along with more mass to absorb heat when driving hard, reducing brake fade.

I'd also wager to say that the 2-pot setup has more brake torque than the 4-pots, as the WRX 2-pot calipers have more brake torque than the 4-pots.

It would be equivalent to a cheaper BBK alternative for the WRX.

These would probably make a mean Auto-x setup...lighter weight than a stoptech or brembo setup. Would give you the same brake modulation as a BBK and better fade resistance than a stock setup.

And I'll say it again, BBK's don't make you stop faster. They just absorb/dissipate more heat than stock setups allowing for more repeated stops w/o brake fade.

I'd drop my 4-pots in a sec for this if I didn't want to stay on 16in wheels.

Can I use the same brake lines?
Can I reuse the speed bleeders from my WRX calipers?
Does the thicker rotors mean you're changing the wheel offset too?

at that price you can piece together a better aftermarket setup, what are the advantages of getting these installed? I am confused, $700 just for fronts you can roll some deep stopping power aftermarket, rotors, pads, ss lines, and ahve money left over for a caliper paint kit :-)

These pads will run about the same as the 4pot pads.

Having personally driven several cars with different brake setups I can honestly say that this is one of the best bang for the buck setups out there. Steven gave me a ride in the car and it just plain stops. There isn't an aftermarket setup out there for that price that can even come close. We're talking 12.4" rotors with calipers and pads.... I'd love to see a setup that can touch that price.

Brake lines, yes
Speed Bleeders, maybe (I will post which size bleeders you will need. Some cars use small front, big rear, some use the oposite, and still some even different. lol...)
Offset change. I don't belive so. The hats appear to be the same thickness. If there is a change it is very minimal. I will measure the hats this weekend.

And finally:

I have had a few minutes to review all of the prices on the fronts & rears. It looks like we will be able to do the Fronts for $650 shipped, the rears for $550 shipped and the full setup for $1150 shipped!! I have also taken a measurement on the rear vented rotors, and updated that in the original post (11.4"). Bobcats are still a little ways out, however I would still recomend this kit with the stock pads, if you just can't wait! We will be able to get factory shims for the bobcats, they are included with the stock pads. For those wondering how much bobcats will add to this kit, you can figure ~$50-75 per end (front/rear).

Nice! $550 for the rears is a great alternative to trying to convert to rear Brembo's, for those of us who who have the fronts and are looking for a little better front/rear bias.
