Post attn: Patrick Olsen - lighting q&a

Hi Patrick!
noted you've installed a headlite harness from Uncle "Yene" Henderson's Comp. Ltd.
Easy? Plug-in add on? Did it include relay(s)? Didja get your bulbs from Comp Ltd too?
Did Gene have a harness and/or relay for the fog circuit?

Thanks for your opinions!

Hi Suber -

I bought a headlight harness kit which came with relays from Comp Ltd. It was an easy install, about 15 minutes. They had a special which included bulbs. I am very happy with the results. Friendly and fast service as well.

Thanks for reply! I'm very familiar with Comp. Ltd service as I've gotten rally stuff from Gene before...
Cheers!

Yeah, what he said! The install was pretty simple, came with the relays, no problems. Didn't check into the fogs, just put PIAA Superwhites into the foglights and left it at that.
I was not terribly overwhelmed by the "power" of the 80/100W bulbs. I probably should put the original bulbs back in again to do another comparison. Originally I got the harness and some no-name 80/100W bulbs from Comp Ltd, but those bulbs were garbage - when I went to high beams they turned noticeably yellowish. So, I replaced those with some new ones, also from Comp Ltd - Raybrig maybe? Some German company. They are definitely better than the first set I had, but like I said I'm not sure the improvement was worth the money I spent.

Could the brightness or lack thereof be a result of Subaru's lens/reflector design? The early generation Legacy headlites responded pretty good to uprated bulbs but then you could use genuine H3's too!

CHeers!

FWIW, I have a 97 GT and my kit came with Hella 80W/100W bulbs.
Patrick, how easy was the SPD 18mm bar to install? Are you happy with it's performance?

Suber - the reflector design could definitely be the problem. I've noticed that the little "hat" that sits on the top of the bulb ("top" being the point, which really aims straight ahead, not up, if you know what I mean) has gotten discolored. Looks like it's being overheated by the higher wattage bulbs - that says to me that a lot of the energy of the bulb is being wasted.

That was bright! I meant "H4's".
Anyway, we used 55/100w's in the 93 Sport, with highs primarily used on last NER night rally & highway - no overheating problems that I noticed - but of course, Subaru's redesigned reflector & housing since then. Thanks, Subaru! Sounds like caution is still advised applying uprated bulbs to newer gen. Legacy.
Thanks!
