It really is. That's apparently what it takes to end a world war.

ok, what if all 141lbs underwent fission?

and prevent any others from starting. A lot of people think that by dropping these bombs on Japan and showing the true power of nuclear weapons it really has kept the world at a relative peace over the last 50-60 years...

The Earth would explode?

Based on that Discovery or History Channel special last year, it seems like a lot of the early atom bomb tests were done with the scientists crossing their fingers. They didn't really know what the hell would happen.

A lot more damage.

The hiroshima bomb was just a wee little nuclear bomb. The average US nuclear weapon today is between 10 and 100 times more powerful.

They didn't seem to have a problem murdering the ones they did when they hit Pearl Harbor.

Or maybe if we dropped millions of pounds of weed on the city...chill them out a bit and hopefully they'll think: Hey, maybe the merikans aren't so bad after all.

The lost of those thousands is nothing compared to what the Japanese did to the civilians they captured, tortured, experimented on, and then killed.

Not saying it was right on our part, but they cant be all bitchy.

Pearl Harbor = military base and they attacked Navy ships.

Hiroshima = civilian city targeted for its terrain and how easy it would be to survey the damage.

For some reason this question popped into my head a few days ago.

The attack on Pearl Harbor is considered a national tragedy...'A day that will live in infamy'. A surprise, unprovoked attack on a US military base that started our war with Japan. What do the Japanese call the 2 A-Bomb drops? Two bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. Did they have any advance notice about the bombings, or were they a surprise, too?

I'm not arguing whether the atomic option was necessary, they had the desired effect on the Japanese. But if a few thousand soldiers killed on a naval base is a national tragedy, how do they feel about the actions of the US at the end?

The Japanese committed zero atrocities to eastern Asia and its civilians. None.

Truman urged Japan to surrender before the bomb was dropped, but they refused.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/truman/...s_warning.html

Quote:
The British, Chinese, and United States Governments have given the Japanese people adequate warning of what is in store for them. We have laid down the general terms on which they can surrender. Our warning went unheeded; our terms were rejected. Since then the Japanese have seen what our atomic bomb can do. They can foresee what it will do in the future.

The world will note that the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a military base. That was because we wished in this first attack to avoid, insofar as possible, the killing of civilians. But that attack is only a warning of things to come. If Japan does not surrender, bombs will have to be dropped on her war industries and, unfortunately, thousands of civilian lives will be lost. I urge Japanese civilians to leave industrial cities immediately, and save themselves from destruction.

I realize the tragic significance of the atomic bomb.

Its production and its use were not lightly undertaken by this Government. But we knew that our enemies were on the search for it. We know now how close they were to finding it. And we knew the disaster, which would come to this Nation, and to all peace-loving nations, to all civilization, if they had found it first.

That is why we felt compelled to undertake the long and uncertain and costly labor of discovery and production.

We won the race of discovery against the Germans. Having found the bomb we have used it. We have used it against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Harbor, against those who have starved and beaten and executed American prisoners of war, against those who have abandoned all pretense of obeying international laws of warfare. We have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans.

We shall continue to use it until we completely destroy Japan's power to make war. Only a Japanese surrender will stop us.

Lets just say they are not too happy. When I went to Japan a few years ago, I made it a point to stay in hiroshima for a few days. We were checking out the peace park and such and ran into a video crew that interviewed us. They asked us questions about how we felt about everything and we did the same. Basically it was a surprise and they still have a sour taste in their mouth from it. But they dont hate every american for it. I also had a chance to see pearl harbor, and here is what I noticed.

Pearl Harbor: More of a "theme park." Food and Drink stands, TV's playing the movie Pearl Harbor; it seemed like they turned a tragic insident into a money maker.

Hiroshima: The Peace park, Shrine, and museum is absolutely breath-taking and inspires hatred towards nuclear warfare and violence (hence the burning flame that will only be extinquished once all nuclear weapons in the world are destroyed.
