Two Jay High School teachers on Thursday were charged with having sex with underage students in 2007.

Jay residents Ashley Burkett, 31, of the 14000 block of State Road 89, and April Watson, 33, of 5100 block of Dobson Road, surrendered Thursday afternoon at Santa Rosa County Jail.

Each faces three counts of illegal sexual activity with a minor, and each was released after posting $50,000 bond, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office said.

An investigation began July 28 after an anonymous letter to the Santa Rosa County School District alleged a sexual relationship between the two teachers and three then-17-year-old boys, according to the arrest reports.

The teens later told investigators that they'd had sex with the teachers between July and October 2007, the report said.

Two of the boys said they had sex with Watson at her home and Burkett's home. One said he had sex with Burkett both at her home and at Watson's home, according to the report.
The students attended Jay High but were not in Watson or Burkett's classes, State Attorney Bill Eddins said.

Burkett teaches reading and special-education students and is the assistant coach for the volleyball team. Watson teaches math and is the junior varsity cheerleader adviser, according to the Jay High School Web site.

Max Nadsady, 18, a recent Jay High graduate, said the two young, blonde teachers seemed to be friends.

He said they both helped with the cheerleading team and extracurricular activities, and he recalled seeing them jogging after school.

"Ms. Watson, she was young and attractive, and Ms. Burkett, she was also pretty attractive," he said. "I mean, they were friendly with the students, but I would have never imagined anything like this."

Sue Salter's daughter is a third-generation Jay High student.

Salter graduated in 1971 and is the outgoing president of the School Advisory Council. She said the news was shocking.

"It floors me. You trust your kids and you trust your teachers and Jay's such a wonderful school," she said. "I'm at a loss for words, and I just hope its not true."

School Board Chairman Ed Gray issued a statement saying "the School District will cooperate with all investigating agencies in a responsible matter," he said.

"Right now that's a criminal matter, and we're letting the sheriff's department handle their investigation," said Lewis Lynn assistant superintendent for human resources.

Lynn said School District employees charged with crimes generally are suspended with pay, until the following School Board meeting when they can be suspended without pay.

They're not ugly, not not hot enough too get off without jail time. Watson will do less time than Burkett. Unless Burkett loses some weight before the trial.

Ms Watson just needs a better hair cut. Olivia Wilde has the same square jaw, but they do a good job of framing her face.

But yes, at 17 I would have tapped it hard enough that she would have had a second period.
