Default So i'm going to san francisco for a few days...

Anyone know of some good cheap places to eat?

I saw an episode of anthony bourdain the other day on sf and was quickly discouraged as he went to all these high dollar places.

I am staying in a hostel for like $20 per night near china town, and I don't want to spend too much money (obviously) but I don't want to eat mcdonald's all week either.

I am going to be around fisherman's wharf, golden gate park, the presidio, and china town. I don't plan on venturing any further.

Random tips would be appreciated, especially what to expect in the sketch parts of town.

well, you can expect to get carjacked in the sketch parts. On the bright side, that area is also known for its hookers and blow.

Japan Town....on Geary. Go to TanPopo Ramen noodle shop. its pretty good. Good luck in chinatown finding suitable places for cheap---in my experience it is mostly Rat-Dick stew or grilled Bullfrog Anus with a side of chicken claws. You could hit Tommy's Joynt off of Van Ness---kind of a Hof Brau style meal--Cash only (you'll find that a ton in SF).

Steps of Rome off of Columbus and Broadway is a great place to eat some good food...Pizza is "hella good" and the Lasagna is just awesome---real close to Chinatown.

Just explore...I couldnt really give you the ins and outs of a ton of places. Lots of little Hole-in-wall bars and restaurants serve great food.

EDIT: Tommy's Joynt is also in (near) the Tenderloin district. Home of some of the most convincing trannies known to man. For the cost of one night's stay in the hostel, you could have a tranny do his/her work on you.

About the sketchiest part of SF I ran into was the Tenderloin (near City Hall and UN Plaza), which was where I happened to be staying with friends. No real thugs, just bums though the thugs always seemed to flock to the Carls Jr. on Market St. @ United Nations Plaza day and night.

Got to see a drug deal get shut down by undercover cops in UN Plaza one night, Crown Vic sliding to a stop and all. Otherwise though I walked around most of the city all hours of day and night carrying my laptop with me and had no problems.

As far as food, In-n-Out in Fishermans Wharf is always good, most everything else is expensive or too high brow for me.

Hit the wharf and ask these two where to eat...they'll hook you up:

Or you could bring a harpoon...

whatever you do, Don't punch the bushman when he scares you. last tourist that did that got 5 years in the pokey!

crepes at 3am at 11th and howard ( it's a cart)

there's also a great japanese place near union square... if i remember the name of it, i'll post it up.

you also need to go get some sharfenberger's chocolate from the ferry building.

bars to hang out at? zeitgeist ( 17th and market i think) and lucky 13 ( farther up on market) has a great jukebox and cheap beer.

House of Nanking - http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/p...ileTab-reviews

Don't bother with the menu, just ask for the "Chef's Special" and the chef will create for you a custom meal.

House of Prime Rib - http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/886038

King Henry VIII dinner FTW. Bring beaucoup $$$, but it's worth it.

I was in SF a few weeks ago for some meetings and ate at Blondies near Union Square and it was pretty good and reasonable if you like pizza.

1. If you go to House of Nanking, do NOT let the mother****ing owner order for you. That ****head ripped me and my friends off when we were there 3 weeks ago.

2. You should have booked a room at the Westin St. Francis in Union Square. It was a badass experience. Or, if you just wanna pick up a hot and extremely drunk milf, go into the bar and start chatting one of them up.

3. Go to Union Square at about 12:30-1:00 in the morning and find the asian dudes that are blazing. Good times.

4. Don't shake hands with any bum. They all have AIDS.

5. The good restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf are expensive.

6. Go to Ghirardelli Square and get some free chocolate.
