So I caught this spider in my dogs food bin after work tonight. I realize it is not THAT big, but it is the biggest I have ever seen in my house. Any idea what it is? Keep in mind I live in the Pacific NW.
here are the crummy cell phone pics. bad quality I know. There is a quarter in the pic for size reference. ![]() ![]()

Probably a Wolf Spider, or whatever they are called.
I have sold houses and moved because of those bastards. |

Need better pictures. Is it able to climb the walls of the plastic?
Being in Washington, I'm going to guess it's probably a male Hobo Spider. That's what it looks like to me, at least through the foggy plastic. Check the coloring against this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo_Spider Just don't get bit. Hurts like a mother and has a high tendency of causing flesh necrosis. My mother was bit on her ankle several years ago and the spot took forever to to heal and still is tender. Many people dispute that Hobos have that capability in their bite, but I swear they can, I've seen it with my own eyes! The good news is they are easily controlled. Generally males only show up in a house because there's a female around, or they are looking for food. They wander extensively (hence why they are called Hobo spiders), and really don't prefer to hang around in one area. If you start seeing a lot of males (distinguished by prominent bulbs on the front most "feeler" legs, and they are also skinnier and lankier than the females), put out some Hobo Spider traps (they are glue traps with bait specifically for Hobo spiders) and search for a female. Females prefer damp darkish places like Brown Recluses, and they will build a web (males don't usually build a web because they are transient). We get a female quite often in one of our bathroom fans that we never use. Usually we know there is one because males start showing up in our towels and under our floormats in that bathroom ![]() Not only are hobo spiders easy to control, but they are also incapable of climbing up slippery surfaces, such as painted walls, finished wood, metal, etc. etc. If you don't want them in your bed (which is another favorite place of theirs ), make sure you don't have any dust ruffles or sheets/blankets that touch the ground. Keep piles of clothes and things like that off the ground and basically give them minimal places to hide. Find any females you can and kill them immediately. If you're religious about killing any females you find, and you put out traps, it's usually not long before you won't see them around very much.Sorry for the dissertation, it's just hobo spiders have pretty nasty bites. We're pretty anal in our house about controlling them because we don't want any trouble with the bites. Very little chance of death, just bad pain and of course the (debated) necrosis which isn't fun. Vostok 7 |

Looking at pictures, I am thinking that I had hobo spiders and not wolf spiders.
Bloody hell, I hate spiders. |

Could be. Looks too small to me, though. We get those too, but they're usually about the size of a half dollar coin or bigger. Unless this one is young. The proportions are a little off for a Hobo, I agree.
That's why I said, need better pictures. ![]() Vostok 7 |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_house_spider They are pretty common around here too, we get quite a few in our house. They're a little more public than the Hobos. Hobos like to hide under things, Giants like to hide under things but also like to run right across the middle of the floor very quickly, usually in the direction of someone's legs Hobos stick to the edges and corners where they can hide.Vostok 7 |

vostok good information! funny you comment on the ability to climb slick surfaces, because I trapped it in a much larger plastic bin at first and the SOB could not climb up the walls. However, the thing moved extremely fast! Oh well, I will just keep and eye out for more!
edit: def. looks just like a giant house spider. Funny though, cause it still cannot climb the plastic it is in. |

Hobos aren't very fast, Giants are friggin speed demons (technically they are the worlds fastest spider), especially when on open ground. Edit: Looking at the pictures, I'm starting to agree with escos that it's a Giant. The legs are just too long. It is a young one, though, their legs can get much longer than that. We've had some pretty big ones here in the house! Fortunately, they compete with the Hobos and their bite isn't nearly as nasty, so I don't hunt them as religiously as the Hobos. Vostok 7 |

Looking at wikipedia, it says the best way to keep hobos away is to have giant house spiders around...I'd keep him if I were you.

I got that picture from that assemble thread. But I seriously had something similar happen in my bathroom last week. I got in the shower and looked up to see ~50 baby spiders on the ceiling. I think I killed about 90% of them, but recently I've found a few that I missed and are much bigger now.
![]() We've had a lot of bugs this summer in Colorado, a lot more rain than usual. |
