Question Dallas Cowboys new scoreboard

As some of you may or may not be aware of, the Dallas Cowboys have a new stadium. Inside of this 1.2B mega stadium hangs a rather large scoreboard, a mere 90 feet above the football field.

This scoreboard is a HDTV measuring 73 feet high by 160 feet long, built at a cost of $40M.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4415658

Titans punter AJ Trapasso hit the scoreboard during a preseason game last weekend

Jerry Jones says it meets the leagues requirements of being only 85 feet above the playing surface, and gave an allowance of an additional 5 feet when his punter Mat McBriar was hitting his punts that high. Mr Jones also feels that if a punter does hit the scoreboard, it should be a "do-over"

The NFLs Competition Committee is looking into how these instances can be remedied. (Titans coach Jeff Fisher is the co-chair of said committee)

Who should be held responsible for this design error?

It's not a design error. It's a rules error. He got clearance from the league who set the height requirements. It'll be corrected either in an emergency competition committee meeting, or next season.

Ultimately, if the systems engineer conducted thorough requirements and specification validation early in the system development lifecycle, and the stakeholders ultimately decided that their operational needs would be satisfied with a 90ft elevation, and verification activities prove that the scoreboard is indeed 90ft above the field for all operational modes, and the exit criteria for system production were satisfied, then the ultimate responsibility if the system is unsuitable lies with the buyer of the system--not the design, production, or integration teams. The Final Countdown!

If anyone has seen this stadium, nothing can be done quickly or easily. I'm sure it would take months to engineer the engineering equipment to pull something like that off.

They moved it lower so Romo can see the ball behind him after he fumbles it.

It can be moved, but it can't be used while it's in the high position. That's what's going to cost money to fix.

I dont have access to the NFL stadium design rules, but I would think that the '85 foot' height requirement dates back to the days where punters hit more linedrive kicks than higher arcing boomers.

I also believe that Jones was in too much of a rush to get something that no one else ever had before to adequately research every possible spect of the implications of having a screen that size hanging from his ceiling.

He's rich. He doesnt care about the cost. He just wants it.
