Default Renting place in 'bad' neighbourhood

I'm currently checking out some places to move to in a couple of weeks/months.

Yesterday I got offered a little house for cheap. Like... Real cheap.
It has everything I want, only downside is that it's in a 'bad' neighbourhood.

I'm a little split over it.. Obviously it's not the prettiest view out the window, then again I have my whole life to move somewhere nice.

On the other hand I don't want to look over my shoulder every time I get out or expect my car to get trashed, dented or scratched every now and then.

What say ye OT? doitdumbass or don'tdoitdumbass?

Don't do it. I've done it before and when you start losing sleep over wondering if people are looking through your windows at night, you'll wish you shelled out the extra couple hundred bucks for a nicer apartment. On the other hand, there are things you can set up to keep people away, and it also depends on how much you need the money I guess.

It's a ground-floor appartement, so chances of people looking in are... well.. they will

And need is a big word, but it would allow me to double what I can save up every month. Which in a year (or two) would make quite the difference

Dunno if you will get insurance or protect yourself if someone comes in...but my ground floor apartment was burgl3d in a not-so-bad neighborhood and we lost something like $2k in laptops and cameras, etc. Fortunately I had renters insurance and it was all covered, but the guy was supposedly involved in a string of armed robberies in the area. If we were home we might have gotten messed up. Unlikely events, but you should consider them.

I lived in some pretty bad neighborhoods in NYC. I didn't have a problem living there. Ground rules are don't act like a douche, don't carry a lot of money on you, and don't show any expensive items on your body. Generally people only **** with you if they think they can get something out of you, or if you provoke them. Sometimes you get a jerk that just wants to **** with random people, so don't put yourself in bad situations.

You'll be living in a ****ty house just like everyone else, you won't be singled out for a robbery or anything unless you give clues you've got something worth taking. Hell, I had a ****ty bicycle that I left by the side of my house in queens without being tied up, rode it to work every day for about a year, never thought about it. One week I bent my rim and just decide to start taking the subway to work and it's gone. I lol because the dude would have to invest more money in the POS to get it back in working order than he would have to spend to buy a working bike.

Anyway, I draw the line when I feel my visitors/girlfriend will be in danger, or feel in danger. I felt very uncomfortable living with my girlfriend in NYC because I had to worry about her ass all the time. Moved outta that ****hole like that

Also, expect your car to get beaten up like a no good whore every day. If I ever lived in a big city again, I would just get a truck, or something I really didn't care about getting cosmetic damage.

Every day I curse myself for living in a country where the odds of getting shot to death are only a fraction compared to the States

have you not seen In Bruges? You are almost guaranteed to get shot!

if you have anything nice, you will be robbed. especially on the ground floor.

I currently live in a townhouse in a 'moderately bad' neighborhood... Not terrible, but here are some things to consider:

-you need to keep your blinds pulled so people can't peek at your stuff while you're gone
-you always need to have your doors locked even when you're home
-you cannot under any circumstances leave a key under the mat... people look for it when you're not home
-you need to keep a gun next to your bed
-you can never have anything delivered via fedex/ups to your home - only to the office or they will be (and have been) stolen.
-have to turn off your outside hose bibs from the inside or else people will leech water to wash their cars or water their lawn
-trash will constantly find its way into your lawn
-can't have nice things outside... best defense is to have everything hidden from view.

You'd rather have the worst house in a good neighborhood than the best house in a bad neighborhood. I know people who bought a 6-bedroom, 200-year-old mansion in Paterson, NJ b/c they thought the price was steal. It's a nice house and all, but they don't go out at night....

Go for it. Why would a thug go to a bad area to rob you? They're gonna go to the nice areas.

FTW.
