Rally Stuff WRC Australia Sept 3-6 talk/results spoiler*

Next Event Round 10:

Repco Rally Australia Sept 3-6 2009

Official Website: Rally Australia

Entry List:Rally Australia Entry List

The World Rally Championship heads for the Southern Hemisphere in order to take on its tenth round of the season, Rally Australia. Returning to the WRC calendar for the first time since 2006 and having switched coastlines, the event reappears under an all-new guise.

Originally hosted in Perth, Western Australia, the event has moved all the way east and established its base in the upper northern region of New South Wales. The renewed Rally Australia will therefore be a radical change and a thorough voyage of discovery for the WRC crews as they attack a succession of mostly short gravel stages.

The schedule runs from September 3rd to 6th, beginning with two passes upon the super special stage situated in Murwillumbah, which will also present the ceremonial start.

I'm still upset that Petter is not bringing a car, I think even with the old Xsara he could have competed for a podium. I guess the expense outweighs the reward.

Be interesting to see what he can do with either a C4 or Focus in the last 2 rallies.

The World Rally Championship makes its hotly-anticipated return to Australia for the first time since 2006 this week.

With a new Gold Coast venue 4000 kilometres east of its previous home in Perth, the revamped rally will provide a new challenge for all of the 44 entered crews, with a staggering 35 stages, more than any other rally this season, included on the itinerary.

The new-look event will be based around the Tweed and Kyogle Shires in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.

A beach-front Service Park in the town of Kingscliff will act as the base for the teams, while the 344.72kms of competitive stages will take place on the loose gravel roads of the region producing a high-speed spectacle for the Australian fans.

The new format includes an exciting sealed-surface Super Special Stage where three cars at a time will run on the 2.55km course bringing the thrilling spectacle of night time rallying to the town of Murwillumbah on three nights of the rally. With two passes over the stage on the opening night it will be the first time that a rally has run two stages on a Thursday evening this season.

Dani Sordo set the pace in Thursday's shakedown for Repco Rally Australia ahead of Citroen team-mates Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier.

After four runs over the 3.29 km stage at Dunloe Park, Pottsville, competitors completed the stage up to seven times.

Sordo set a time of 1 minute 34.3 seconds to be fastest by 0.5 seconds. Even Sordo's second fastest time of 1m 34.5s was faster than his team-mate and defending world champion Sebastien Loeb, who put in a time of 1m 34.8s.

"The first of my four runs was essentially intended to sweep aside the thick top-coating of dust which covered the stage early on,” Sordo explained. “We tried a number of settings because this rally's stages are particularly varied. Some are very twisty, while others are significantly faster. They remind me very much of New Zealand. I think I will feel at home here."

"The morning went well for us and we were able to try a number of settings,” Loeb added. “We face the prospect of covering stages with very different profiles on the same loop, so it was a case of trying to find the best compromise."

In dry and dusty conditions, Citroen Junior Team driver Sebastien Ogier completed a Citroen lock-out, with a time of 1m 35.2s, 0.9 seconds off Sordo.

FFS, what is wrong with these protesters.. it's hard to feel sympathetic when they are endangering the lives of competitors to illustrate their concern for the safety of an animal or two. I'm not 'for' mowing down any creatures or disrupting their habitats, so on one hand I can see the protesters' point, but that all gets muted when you find out that the leading cars actually were pelted with debris (apparently during transit, not a live stage, but still).

That article and others on that newspaper's site indicates that people also cut fences and let cattle roam loose on the roads as well as waved yellow flags as if they were marshals.

Sebastien Loeb, Citroen, Rally Australia 2009Sebastien Loeb has lost his Rally Australia victory after the three Citroen C4s received one minute penalties for a technical infringement.

The stewards' decision hands the win to Mikko Hirvonen, who therefore extends his championship lead to five points with just two rounds to go.

Loeb's factory team-mate Dani Sordo and Citroen Junior driver Sebastien Ogier - who had finished third and fourth - were also given the same penalty for an irregularity in their cars' anti-rollbars.

"The stewards received a post-event scrutineering report from the FIA technical delegate which stated that the front anti roll bar link of car no.1 did not comply with the homologation form of the car," said a statement from the officials.

Loeb had won the event on the road, ending a four-month win-less streak and seemingly bringing him back to within one point of Hirvonen in their battle for the title.

With Citroen tipped to dominate the next event in Catalunya, Loeb's victory had put him back in the driving seat in the 2009 title fight, but Hirvonen's increased five point cushion now gives the Ford driver a much better chance of being the first man to beat Loeb to a world championship since Petter Solberg in 2003.

The penalties leave Loeb, Sordo and Ogier in second, third and fifth places respectively, with Jari-Matti Latvala moving up from fifth to fourth in the second Ford.

HIRVONEN PROMOTED TO RALLY AUSTRALIA VICTORY AFTER CITROENS PENALISED

FORD driver Mikko Hirvonen has extended his lead in the World Rally Championship after a stewards’ decision demoted Citroen’s Sebastien Loeb to second place, almost six hours after the official finish of Repco Rally Australia today.

Loeb had been declared the winner, but tonight the stewards imposed a one-minute penalty on the time of the 1# Citroen after finding it had front suspension parts that did not comply with the homologation records for the car.

They imposed the same penalty on the Citroen C4 WRCs of teammate Dani Sordo and Citroen Junior team driver Sebastien Ogier after the team verified they also had the same parts, described as front anti-roll bar links that were longer and required additional notches.

The Citroen team did not appeal the decision.

The decision had the effect of reversing the original 1-2 finishing positions and, instead of Hirvonen leading Loeb by one point in the Drivers’ standing, he now has a five-point break with just two rounds remaining in the 2009 FIA WRC.

Sordo remains in third, but Ogier surrendered fourth place to Hirvonen’s BP Ford Abu Dhabi teammate Jari-Matti Latvala.

Current Championship leader Mikko Hirvonen will benefit from an 'expanded' test ahead of the Rally de Espana next month and the first all-asphalt round since the season opener in Ireland.

Hirvonen had thought he had conceded two points to Sebastien Loeb after finishing second to the Frenchman in Australia on Sunday. However six hours after the official finish in Kingscliff he was handed the victory when the five-time world champion - and his Citroen team-mates, Dani Sordo and Sebastien Ogier, were all given one-minute penalties for a technical infringement.

Hirvonen thus finished 47.5 seconds up on Loeb and instead of going to Catalunya with only a one point lead in the drivers' championship, he will now take a five point cushion, something that gives his bid to take the crown a major boost.

"It's a shame that after such a thrilling battle for three days the result of the rally is decided in the stewards' room," Hirvonen reflected. "I suffered a points loss in Portugal two years ago, so I know how Sébastien, in particular, must feel.

"This decision has a major effect on the championship standings and we now go to Spain with a five point lead."

Hirvonen had to settle for third in Spain last year, after Loeb and Sordo dominated the event in their Citroen C4 WRCs. Indeed he only took P3 after then BP Ford Abu Dhabi team-mate, Francois Duval was instructed to let the 29-year-old by.

He is determined though to do better this time out: "I'll try to do all I can. We're going to have a test before the rally so that we can try and find something for the car. I'll be trying to do some practice myself as well. I'll try to get back into tarmac speed and try to find a little bit more (speed)," he continued.

"I'm sure it's going to be a difficult weekend for me, but you know, I'll just need to go up there and go flat out and then we'll see. I'm definitely not giving up even though it's maybe not the best surface for me, but you never know what's going to happen. So I'm really looking forward to it."

Meanwhile Ford motorsport chief, Gerard Quinn has promised that the team will be doing everything it can to help Hirvonen in his battle with Loeb.

"This was one of the most exciting rallies the championship has witnessed for some time," Quinn added. "Five drivers were in the mix for victory initially, and any one of three could have won today.

"That excitement is transferred to the drivers' championship and it looks as if the outcome could go down the wire at the final round in Britain next month.

"Before that we journey to Spain and we have an expanded test scheduled there before the rally to be fully prepared for the challenges of the asphalt."
