Default Need help with camera.

I am trying to get into the hobby of photography. I was wondering what kind of camera is a good starter camera but really bad ass and yet not too expensive. I know that a really good camera will be expensive but I just would like to get a not expensive camera but something good. I have a point and shoot but I know I need the manual cameras, I would not even know where to start in make and model.

Thanks,
Dav D.

Personally I'd look around at camera shops for used equipment. You can get a higher level camera for cheap.

+1 on the d40. I have a d80 and the d40 has better image quality than my d80. Use the money saved to buy a 35mm Fixed F2.8 lens. It's all you should ever normally need. Occasionally you need longer than 35... but rarely.....

The 35mm is a great easy to use focal length. Has twice the image quality of any zoom that any mortal man can afford and the f1.8 is awesome depth of field control and also make night images really easy to take without a tripod.

*nikon needs to give me a sales job after that post....

Define "...too expensive."

The problem with the D40 & D60 is that they have no screw drive for non-AFS lenses. There are lots of good deals on used Nikon glass out there if you know where to look, but it's usually older non-AFS lenses that need a screw drive for the auto focus to work. The D80 will work with all Nikon lenses.

OTOH, if you buy a D40 kit, it will come with a perfectly good lens for the beginning photographer and you can later decide whether you need different/better lenses or not and can upgrade to a different body. Or, you can just manually focus older lenses if you buy them.

Somebody hook me up with a screaming deal on a lightly used D700 please.

Hey there StealthfishWRX,

Welcome to the Off Topic section of Nasioc.com. I would highly suggest the Canon XT for a relatively high-end starter camera. You can pick up a nice condition used set for a great price, it is easy to use, and has many interchangeable lenses.

I hope this helped. Please PM me with any questions.

I hope this makes you smile.

you dont necessarily need a dslr, yet you can do much more with them. you could also look at the fixed lens super zoom's for a nice transition camera into the land of dslr

I would recommend handling a Nikon and Canon prior to purchase. If you like the feel of Nikon, I would suggest looking for a D50. Although the D40/D40x/D60/D70 has more bells and whistles, the lack of autofocusing on non AF-S lens is a turn off. The D50 is discontinued but I would definitely find a used one locally. You can get one with probably the kit 18-55mm lens for approximately $300. This is an ideal setup to get your learn on. The 18-55mm lens is pretty sharp for being a cheap plastic lens.
Another inexpensive lens to consider would be the Nikon 50mm f/1.8, you can get a brand new one for about $130 or so and a used one for $100. It is great for low light and portraits. It is a prime lens though so the length is fixed. It will help you with composition in the long run though.

How is the image quality worse in your D80? Color? Tone? High ISO?
My last body was a D80 and the images were great.

I bought my 50mm f1.8 for $50 on ebay. It's an older one but in excellent condition. They are common and cheap and an extremely sharp lens.
