Default NWIC Photographers - Photo Assignment #44 - Forces of Nature

NWIC Photographers - Photo Assignment #44 - Forces of Nature
READ ME FIRST
The Rules are as follows:

1) Assignments will run bi-monthly with an assignment from the 1st through the 15th of the month and the 16th through the end of the month.

2) The host supplies a topic and the entrants post 1-3 of their best images.

3) The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd). He/she is not eligible to enter.

-The 1st place winner then chooses the next topic, judges the winner and passes on the baton to the new champion.

-For simplicity a new thread should be started by the winner with the new topic.

4) The host should post a sample photo of the assignment topic to "get the ball rolling."

5) To keep a level playing field, ***the photos for the assignment must be taken within the assignment period***

(however, the host may be able to post a photo from outside of this period to give the entrants a sample photo).

6) Each photo should be no larger than 1024 pixels at its largest side

7) Borders or Watermarks are not permitted

8) Post the camera type, lens, and if possible the EXIF data (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc) with the photo.

9) Photographers should also be from the NWIC.
This isn't because we are a bunch of elitist jerks,
it's a way to keep the number of photo submissions down to a manageable level for the judging
and because it is an NWIC photographer assignment after all

10) Violations of the rules listed herein may lead to the deletion of your submission.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any pictures of nature shaping/changing the environment. Wind, water, erosion, etc...

A few from last weekend.

Ok, I know I'm not supposed to post in here, but I did recently visit the NW for WCSS11.. I just wish to add one photo to the beautiful shots already displayed here.

I call it "Welcome to Hell"

^^^While that is an AMAZING picture, I find it hard to believe you took that within the proper timeframe. If you did take it in the last 4 days...then it is the front runner for 1st place.

Bump for the ultimate failure of photo assignments. I had just went to Yellowstone, and there were many examples there.

Looks like subie photo is a lock so far.

it is a rule to help other people develop their photography skills. You can look at what f stop or iso they used to get the photography that they posted.

Yeah, don't think I'm going to get anything done for this assignment. Sorry.

^^Why is it silly? Knowing aperature, shutter speed, and focal length can go a long way to figuring out how a photo came out the way it did. Do try and remember that this is an assignment thread, the contest aspect is just there to determine who gets to pick the next assignment.

This might be a little bit of a stretch for this subject, but I just got back from a kayaking weekend up in BC and took a few. The kayaker really doesn't fit the category, but the wave sure does. This is a tidal standing wave in salt water. I will throw this up here for now, and try to get some more up later.

it also stops people from just finding something on google and posting it. this way, they have to know the f-stop, shutter speed, etc.

Anyone that is posting in this thread should know what the aperture ring does and how different shutter speeds effect a photo. If not, they should be reading up on the basics before they come out to play.

I think it's silly that it is required, not that people make it available. If someone wants to post up their settings with their photo, that's fine. I just don't think someone should be out of the running if they don't have these details up there that many people could probably guess anyways. As I said before, if people can't get a good feel for this data just by looking at the pic, they should be reading up on the basics of photography.

Not sure if serious. But someone could just make that **** up if they really wanted to dupe the NWIC photo crowd.

Good lord man! It says to post that information "if possible". This is standard stuff to post on almost every photography forum out there. Most of the pros post their EXIF data with their pictures on forums like this. Why are you making such a huge deal out of this?

Here is something of DPReview:
Quote:
Knowing the exif data is important to me to know the limitations of the photographic equipment and the situation. How much aperature was required to get that depth of field? How much shutter speed was required to stop that action or get that blur? Is there still reserve capability to shoot that picture later in the day or with less light? What would it take to shoot that picture at a lower ISO to get a cleaner picture? These are some things that knowing the exif data can tell you.
Sure you can look at a picture and guess the shutter speed and aperture, but you can't get very close in most cases, and you don't know what ISO was used along with lens, camera, and such.

In no way am I making a huge deal out of it. My last post was simply responding to people that directed comments at me. I was just answering them.

I just think it's silly that people HAVE to so other people's EXIF when all of the settings you will have to use when you shoot will be completely contingent on your scenario, not theirs.

But enough of this, back to the contest!

glad some pics were posted, i never got to taking any. obviously.

my thoughts on the #8 rule: it reduces some of the "how did you take that pic?" "what lens did you use?" "What camera body?" hopefully the reader will just see the info there and skip asking it. or perhaps they'll see the info and maybe they'll just try similar settings and see what happens. that's how i learned. Learning the basics is relative. for me, aperture and dof clicked. for a friend of mine, it was a little slower process. It is also a way to force a newbie photographer to learn what exif is. don't just snap a pic and post it. find out what settings you had. *shrug*
