There's a reason the TC-SST is popular on the track; it's damn, damn quick.
Here's to hoping SOA comes out with a TC-SST clone that can take more horsepower than the X's ![]() |

Its nothing special. Just an STI A-Line with carbon roof and suede interior. Sure the car doesn't make much sense but it may be an opportunity for Subaru to display different features/options with a single vehicle. This way they can get feedback on what catches on, what works, what people like/hate. Why produce 3-4 different models (base, high performance, luxury, concept, etc.) when you can mash it all into one vehicle.
Face it, especially in this market, each auto maker is looking for ways to cut costs. Look at the bright side, at least they are participating in the Tokyo Motor Show. So many auto makers already pulled out to cut costs. Sure, I think its a little confusing to know where Subaru is going these days but one thing is for sure is that they are trying to appeal to a broader range of people. I think they are trying to appeal to too many markets at once. It's about selling volumes of cars now, not the niche markets. |

"Meet the WRX STI Carbon. It has a carbon fiber roof. And a five-speed automatic transmission borrowed from the Legacy – no manual. And... suede seats. Yup, that's it. Now, we like the roof, don't get us wrong. Removing weight and lowering the center of gravity is exactly what the STI needs. But, a slushbox? For reals? Subaru says the five-speed auto is there to offer, "distinctive driving pleasure to a wider range of customers." Ah, the old dumbing it down so you can sell more trick. Hey, it worked for Porsche (see: Cayenne)."

If you're being serious, and don't know:
The TC-SST is the transmission used in the Evo X MR. The same argument and complaints were made when Mitsubishi said they were bringing out an "automatic", but it turned out to be "good". Now, no, Subaru does not appear to be following that same path here; they don't seem to be creating a "good" automatic, just the same one as LGT. If you're not being serious, and were joking: "The TC-SST is the transmission that the car that's better than the STi uses. And that car is an Evo X." ![]() |

Wow.
Subaru really doesn't have a clue where they want to go with their brand, do they? Whoever's coming up with this stuff, well better yet who's allowing/encouraging this stuff should be fired. If they really want to start doing this kind of stuff, great, but don't call it a STI. It stops being a sports car when you start trying to please everyone all at once. |

It's an STI aimed more at (I'm guessing) mature people. It has a more luxury interior with the luxury (demographically speaking) feature of an auto. A lot of people nowadays (besides the gearhead crew) prefer auto's.
Why do you think so many cars come with ZOMG horsepower and an auto? The people who buy these cars want a car with power (whether they want to use it or for bragging rights) but they also want a smooth ride, easy operation (read, no manual), and an upscale interior. |

Honestly, I'd like to see them bring this tranny to the US for the WRX, if not the STI. I'm thiiiisss close to pulling the trigger on one or the other, but the last time I drove a stick was when I worked at a moving company when I was in college, and I'm worried I'll regret buying a stick if I'm stuck in traffic.
I'm cross shopping the wrx with the wrx/sti and the infiniti EX35. None of the cars are exactly a slouch when it comes to acceleration and handling, but the subes are much more visceral than the Infiniti as a performance car. If I didn't need the cargo space, I probably would have picked up an EVO as a compromise between the sube and the EX, so yes, an auto as an option wouldn't be a bad thing for the car. |
