Default Welded on the car, broke a bunch of electrical stuff...

So, I had to throw some TIG on a weld nut that started spinning in the subframe, and even though I unhooked the negative terminal on the car before I started welding, when I turned it on the airbag light came on and the horn no longer works.

My friend checked the fuses, and they seemed intact. Any ideas on how I should diagnose what the problem is?

My first guess would be check to make sure you didn't just affect a ground somewhere near the front bumper/radiator support when you were under there welding... air bag sensors and horn are usually dependent on grounds, I know both my 97 Impreza and one 90 Legacy have both had issues with disconnected body grounds. (its easy to unplug/disconnect stuff, or mess up a sketchy connection when moving stuff and welding too...) check that first, after that, good luck.

Hm... I pulled the steering rack and put it back in a couple times, since this whole thing started with a steering rack bushing install from hell, so that's definitely a possibility.

However, I know the horns are grounded straight through their brackets, and I just used that ground to install some other stuff today, so I know their ground still should be good. I may poke around with a multimeter tomorrow, and see what I can see.

The steering rack is not near any of the grounds I had trouble with on my 97, so I don't think that would affect the airbag either, but you never know where the connections are made without a bit of luck or a LOT of knowledge... but check every possible bolt, metal to metal contact, etc...

When you had the rack out, did you turn the steering wheel? If you did the clockspring/roll connector was destroyed, and that would explain the two symptoms (airbag light and no horn). It is not an electrical issue.
Getting the airbag code read will confirm where the problem is, but most likely it will point to that circuit.

I would vote on roll connector as well if I just heard the symptoms. I don't think it had anything to do with welding though. I think I have an RS roll connector if you want it, but not sure if it fits and 02 properly.

Yeah, I did turn the wheel, so that makes a lot of sense. If that's all that it is, that's fantastic.

I checked two dealers at some point and one wanted $280, the other like $319. Sucks.

Try that if you want a new one. $230 shipped, not too bad.

You are supposed to hang chains from the frame to the ground to well... ground it out, when you weld like that.
