Default Night on Bald Mtn. TSD rally Olympia, WA

I thought that I'd whore up my story a little bit more (already posted on LGT.com).

It all started at 3pm on Saturday when David and I met up in Olympia at the Denny's. I had a Moonsovermyhammie and LB had a create it yourself grand slam. It was served to us by Keanu Reeves! Once we finished lunch we went out to the OBXT to go over final plans and double check the car. At that point we noticed that the car had a low tire.

I knew that there was a Jiffy Lube around the corner and we headed over there and had them air up all of the tires to 40 PSI. I believe that this keep us from ripping out a sidewall or rolling a bead while on the rally. This was a last minute suggestion by another competitor (who won our class).

While registering I managed to talk several entrants into letting us move ahead in line because we were going to try and film the entire event with the hero cam and needed as much natural light as we could get. This netted us with the number 38 (the first car out was car #31). After registering we were handed rally instructions/directions which was something that we were not used. In all of the other TSD's we've competed in we were handed the instructions the moment that we were leaving the start line. This gave us ample time to pour through the instructions and find tricky spots and make a note of them. First car out was at 6:31 PM Our start time would be 6:38 PM.

Enough of the boring blah blah blah.

Once we transited from the on road to the off road section we were waiting for our time to leave. At 0 seconds until we were supposed to leave we remembered that the hero cam was NOT on or recording (obviously ) and had to stop the car. I shot out and got it going. We ended making up the time for the stop over the next two stages.

Beings that this was a "Monte Carlo" style rally all of the notes are just pictures of the intersections with mileages telling you what your odometer SHOULD read when you come upon the intersections (see above picture). Well, being new to THIS style of TSD rally we (read I) forgot to zero our odometer at the beginning of the next stage(s). You actually have to zero it on the fly because you don't stop at the end of the stage you just continue on from one to the next. Because we (again, read I) kept forgetting to zero it we would realize it at the next rally note and then zero it. At that point we would have to make the corrections on the fly. For instance, if we zeroed it .4 miles into the stage, at mileage 1.79 in the instructions we had to do it at odometer reading 1.39. While that might not sound too hard, between having to do it about 75 times and having to ask David if it was corrected mileage of actual mileage was a pain. Lesson learned ZERO the odometer!

The first leg of the rally was 89.77 miles long and I think we did fairly good. We didn't miss any turns and we felt like things were finally clicking by the end of the stage. The end of the first leg was around 9:30 PM and gave us about 40 minutes to do anything that we needed to get done before starting the second leg. We checked the tires, had a potty break, made sure that the ladder rack was secure, and diagnosed a head light issue. For that last bit of the first section the HID low beams were going off and then back on by their own free will, very un-nerving. We found out that the plug attached to the bottom of the relay must was loose. I zip tied it to a solid object and we never had a problem after that.

The start of the second leg went with out a hitch (as you will read later, no pun intended). Well, for at least about 1/2 of an hour.

Some how when were we traversing through a big open area we managed to go slightly off course and wound up going down a different road then we should have. About a 1/4 of a mile down the road, car #33 (I think), a fully prepped STi rally car, came wizzing past us (note: roads are narrow) in the other direction. "That's odd", we thought out loud as we continued on for another 1/4 of a mile and realized that this couldn't be the correct road. We figured this because we hadn't come upon our next instruction and we were way past where it should have been according to the odometer. We found a place to turn around (note: roads are still narrow) and headed back to find out where we screwed up. On our way out we came across 2 other cars and kindly let them know that this was the wrong way, something that the Sti rally car driver didn't do.

Once we had gained our bearings we were about 5 minutes behind. We figured that we could make that time up with some "fancy" driving. So we picked up the pace.

Earlier, when we had gotten off course our odometer was still ticking away and once we got back on course we had to make odometer corrections on the fly again. Lets see, doing math in your head/out loud while doing 40-50 mph on an unknown gravel road in the dark, yeah we should be able to do that. NOPE!!! Wrong turn again!!! We didn't wait too long after going down the wrong road to turn around and backtrack.

Once again we were met with on coming traffic. We rolled down the window and let them know we were on the the wrong road. They told us that it was the RIGHT road and if we weren't sure we could ask the sweeper car that was behind them.

Side note: The sweeper car is a car that they let loose after all of the cars have started to make sure that no one is left out there, broken down, or otherwise.

That means that we went from being the 7th car in line to the last car (27th). There were 20 cars between us and where we needed to be. After we confirmed with the sweeper car that it was the correct road we backed up for 1/8 of a mile until there was a place to turn around (where we had turned around earlier when we had thought that we were going the wrong way). Some of you may have noticed my "trailer hitch mod" to help us if we had to back up (see below). Well, I had decided that it wasn't doing much good since we weren't doing any backing up for the first half of the rally we wouldn't need it for the second half. Boy was I wrong and could have used it for this part.

Once we had gained our bearings AGAIN and were back on course we had lost more then 14 minutes of time total. No biggie, we would just fill out a Time Declaration Form aka time dec. Unfortunately, the max time that you can put down is 9 minutes and 30 seconds. I had David fill one out for the max time and then we kicked the speed up another notch to try and make up the other 5 minutes we were behind.

At this point we knew that we were too far behind to place and decided to turn the TSD into a real rally and we then turned it up to 9/10th. Yes we were cautious and entered blind corners with safety for fear of oncoming vehicles (we had encountered at least 7 other rigs out there, that weren't a part of the TSD, not including the other rally cars). Other then the blind corners we hauled balls everywhere else. The highest top speed that we achieved out there was 60 mph according to the v.2 AP (were using it's digital speedo to keep us consistent earlier in the night).

The OBXT on Bridgestone re92a's soaked up the potholes like a dream. We were able to take the roads at 50-55 mph the whole time only having to slow down for corners. A few of which we under-steered in and ended up with a rear tire part of the way into a ditch. At that point I remembered some words of wisdom that Spoonwacker texted to David and I before the rally "...when in doubt power out" so I did!

Once we had picked up speed we were catching up with other TSD cars. One by one they would let us pass and we would continue ahead towards position #7, our rightful spot. Some of them were fully prepped rally cars and it felt good passing them, even though they were just following the posted speeds. For the next half hour we covered a lot of ground and passed a lot of cars (the actual count was 18). At one point we passed a 06-07 black rally prepped Impreza (cute female co-pilot btw) and immediately goosed it and completed a perfect four wheel drift around a tight 90* right turn, I sure showed them how to drive. For those of you who didn't know, I flashed the OBXT to stage 1 before the rally and was glad that I did. Those extra HP & TQ #'s gave us much better throttle response and pick up after tight corners or when after passing people. They especially helped with all of the extra weight that we had in the car from our over planning.

We weren't the only people behind. There was a Cadillac Escalade that was also behind. (FYI, it was a rental and they drove like they stole it!) We followed them for a while at 55+ mph until they made a wrong turn and didn't listen to us when we told them otherwise. Following that Caddy at speed was one of the highlights of the night.

We were able to keep our speed up until we got behind a mid 80's Accord that refused to pull off and let us pass. They had more then 10 areas that they could have pulled over and didn't once extent the courtesy of letting us through. I don't know if David edited it out but at one point while he was shooting video I frustratedly announced that I would like to help them pull off by nudging them into a ditch. We followed the (insert nasty adjective here) Accord for about 15 minutes until we came to an area where other cars were stopped. At that time we noticed that we were only 2 cars behind where we needed to be in line and we also 5 minutes ahead of schedule for the entry time of the next section. We had made up about 20 minutes of our 14 minutes that we were behind. Not too bad!

We were able to get ahead of the two cars that should be behind us number wise, take our place, and start the next section on time. With only a couple of sections left we were determined to get back in tune with what we were there to do. David was calling out directions like a pro while I was on top of resetting the odo on the fly! It was finally clicking! We hammered out the last sections like clockwork. While we didn't finishing those sections perfectly, we had our foot in the door for being pro-novices for the next rally, Nov 7th.

The last section of the rally was all highway. We dumped out of the ORV park onto tarmac at the same time as the Black rally prepped Impreza (remember, cute female co-pilot) that we had passed earlier. For the next 10 miles of 2 lane divided highway we drove side by side, most of the time with both of our rally lights on! Let's just say that the road was very well lit up. While doing this David got some good shots and video of their car and hopefully they also got some nice rolling shots of ours.

We made it back to the starting/ending point at 12:37am exactly 1 minute ahead of schedule (this was okay because the last section was a transit zone and was not timed). For the next 1-1/2 hours we waited for the scored to be tallied up. They announced the winners at 2:15am, what a night. We finished dead middle for our class (7th out of 14) and the entire field (14th out of 27). Not too bad for a first time David and I agreed. David and I both headed home at 2:30 am from Olympia. He headed north while I headed south (I was headed to my in-laws in Chehalis). Once I made it to the I-5 south on-ramp from HWY 101 I became stuck behind a car going 12mph under the limit! Can anyone guess who it was??? Yep, you're all correct. It was that SAME stupid Honda Accord!!! I recognized his license plate from when I had been following him earlier. Once we finally made it onto the freeway from the 1/2 mile long on-ramp I gave him a ricer fly by and was on my way to a warm bed.

Fixed. Mine is dumped and I can still pull up on the sidewalk in residential Seattle and make it into Katie and Ryans yard haha. It's always still a Subaru!

It's totally understandable, a high mileage car on a limited budget, don't wanna risk breaking anything that needs to get fixed.

^ Well said. If I break anything significant I would have to sell my bike in order to fix it. And thats just not gonna happen.

Oh man Monster's Revenge sounds like so much fun but I'm not sure the STi could be prepped in time for gravel use. How long until the first event of next season? We'll just see how Friday works out for us...

Haha-Sorry about that, I thought driving by you the other direction in the ditch at 55 mph was communication enough! We had a good time too, our first time out, we had some challenges.
I liked you car BTW, pretty sweet! It looks like the ideal TSD setup. Good story too, I'll try to post up our mis-adventures if I get a chance. It was cool seeing everybody, can't wait to try it again now that we understand how the timing works...
