Exclamation Some creepy big brother **** with Wifi access points going on.

This really amazed me. My boss just got an iTouch and when he goes into the map application at his house it drops him right on his house. When he does it here at the office, it puts it in Baltimore. The access point here used to be at our Baltimore division. This is where it gets really ****ing bizarre. Apparently there are roaming vans that go around and put the location of access points into a gigantic database and this is how the iTouch figures out where you are located.

Big brother is not only watching, but it is logging too. Creepy.

Whaaaa? Wouldn't it just be a hell of a lot easier to associate MAC address to a location via the IP is first connected with?

have a tool here at work they were playing with developing that can track you via a wireless device against a floorplan map.

like office gps..

there are other places that have developed similar tools.

main use so far, not by us, is to track hospital assets via passive rf tags. apparently huge amounts of man hours are lost looking for wheelchairs

Is that why when I try to do location-based Speedtest.net runs on my iPhone at work it says I'm in Ohio?

That would be great to keep track of the wandering elderly too. If you think it sucks to lose a wheelchair, imagine what happens when they find grandma talking to a furnace in the basement after she's been missing for 3 days?

Only if you never go anywhere with your iPhone. Otherwise no matter where you're connected, it'll still show your location as "mom's basement".

But I wasn't thinking 4th dimensionally about it... it's moot. For some reason I got it in my head that APs would be "registering" with the vendor of this iTouch app.

Yeah, I got creeped out the other day when I hit the blue dot in Google Maps on my laptop. It literally pinpointed my location better and quicker than my iPhone did, all based on Wifi.

Totally tripped me out.

this is already a product that you can purchase with proximity security systems in office buildings. The last company that i worked for looked into buying one to track productivity and time spent in one's office.

When we were testing it you could run a report on how long someone spent in the restroom every day. it was bizarre.

No. They check the whois information for your IP address. If your Internet provider is based in Ohio, it can do this.

Yes. Apparently they can still get some sort of identification info out of the AP even if it is secured and it goes right into the database.

While I applaud your deviousness, what makes him a punk ass? Was it something involving trying to steal your internets, or something completely unrelated to computers?

I just want to understand why I should hate him with you.
