Default Long distance car sale - how to accept $$$

My brother is selling his car to some guy down in FL.

Guy in Florida wants to send money via paypal, I say eff that. I told my brother to only do electronic bank transfer. The buyer says eff that, we might take the money and run.

Looks like we're both worried about getting ripped off here.

I was initially more worried about him being able to stop payment with paypal after getting the car, but in all honesty, I don't have a clue about accepting that amount of money over paypal.

What's the easiest way to do this?

Why not just pay with cash when the car is handed over? I wouldn't do Paypal just because of the fees involved.

How is the car getting to the buyer?

Either transact with cash when he gets the car, or find a local buyer.

Oh, sorry about leaving out that important piece of info.

Buyer wants to use a shipping company. He wants to have this company just pick it up one day.

that is a hard one. Any family out there or something? Have him go with someone to the bank and get a bankers check made out. once you hear from your contact, you send the title down and he shipps the car. Something like that.

I hear Western Union money orders are good. Especially when routed through Nigeria.

Not always a nigerian scam. I sold my 4runner like that, and the transaction went just fine.

Ok, this was 6+ years ago when the scammers weren't really in full swing yet, but I used paypal. I actually ended up holding the truck for an addional month for the guy because he was having issues with arranging a shipper. These days I'm sure most everyone would be going "OMG its teh SCAM!!!", but it worked just fine.

So buying a used car sight unseen is becoming the norm now?

When I sold my last car, a kid flew all the way from Kansas to buy it. He paid cash.

Ther's simply no other way I'd do it.

^^^ That's how I've bought two of my cars. I'll either fly or have someone drive me there. The seller and I would go to the bank and have them wire him the money.

Tell him that's fine, after the money clears. I bought my 911 like that.

Somebody is going to have to let go of either the cash or the car first, traditionally that's the buyer's job.

Drive to Florida. Do the transaction. Charge an extra $1k (what it'll cost him to ship anyways), buy a ticket home, fly home.

The only way to do it safely would be a wire transfer. If he is balking at that I would walk from the deal.

I have done this three times now.

Wire transfer bank account to bank account is the only way to do it. Period.

Well, unless he wants to pay the paypal fees, but set up another paypal account to a seperate bank account and don't send the car until you get the money out of that paypal account and that bank account. What I am saying is: do the wire transfer.

Paypal works, but the fees kill you (or the buyer). Wire bank transfers cost nothing these days, and are safe and secure. Not willing to do that, I say walk.

1. Complete a Bill of Sale.
2. Copy your ID.
3. Mail the BOS and ID to him.
4. He signs BOS and copies his ID and returns to you.
5. He sends you PayPal. You withdraw the funds.
6. You send car and title.

^^^^^ yeah that. if he's legit, then he'd have no problem with this. or shouldn't anyway. unless yore desperate to sell it i'd tell them you're going to need the wire transfer.

I sold my wrx the same way. He flew in from CA, paid in cash/gave him the title.

As long as you make out a bill of sale you should be fine. He paid for a shipping company and they called me when they were ready to come get it.

I got a cashiers check from my bank and the seller just verified that the check was good and I drove the car home. I'm sure you could do something like that. Have him send a cashier check then you verify it. Then you allow the car to be shipped. But if he is being a sketch ball about it I would just walk away.
