Default 10" sub under the seat? Yes! Pics inside!

Some of you may remember from about a month ago my project to lighten my car but still have decent audio. First I installed the Pioneer TSD1720 components and moved my Alpine amp from my trunk to under the driver's seat. The midrange output of the components was great but my music was still lacking and I decided that I still wanted a sub. I got rid of my 12" sub in the trunk that weighed almost 40lbs! So what was I to do?

Some people on here helped me with some ideas from a passthrough box to an underseat box on the passenger side. I finally settled on underseat. It would be a lower center of gravity under there anyway. I looked at 6.5" shallow mounts and 8" shallow mounts and almost went with the pioneer 8" shallow mount. I wanted more though! I looked at every 10" shallow mount woofer but they all required 0.4 cubic feet of box space which is way too big for under a seat. What good is a shallow mount sub if you need a crapload of space to run the speaker anyway?

I finally found this solution after some people on here told me to go with an eD 6.5" sub.

This sub is the eD SQ-10 subwoofer. http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=106

While they were at it I had them build me a custom box to these specs.

First I think I will need 1/2" material to get enough volume and then use fiber fill to stuff it.

A - 5"

B - 11.5"

C - 14.5"

D - 3.5"

If you visualize this the box slopes.

Anyway, here all the installed pics.

Best of all it weighs only 18lbs and has a much lower center of gravity than in the trunk. Its also easy for my to remove for autocrosses.

If you are thinking about this call Brett at http://www.edesignaudio.com/contact.php and ask him for an STi underseat box.

Thanks for looking

which alpine amp do you have? I was worried about mounting mine under the seat because apparently they get really hot.

I have an alpine f-450 amp. It does get hot. Best way to do it is put it on "feet". Pretty much mount each corner to a 1/2" peice of plywood or similar. That keeps it off the floor to help with cooling. Also there are air vents under your seat (when you put the switch to the feet position). If it gets hot...crank the A/C on it!

By the way there is only 75watts going to this thing and it sounds better than the crappy MA audio 12" sub I had in my trunk with 150 watts going to it. I was pleasantly suprised at how well it works. It is very well balanced with the components I have. I actually have the subwoofer turned down right now.

I've got an Alpine...something. 250?
It's nailed on my back seat right now.
Not literally nailed. But whatever.

Does the sub hit the seat at all (ie can you still move the seat back and forth)?

And do you happen to have a shot from the side?

Your idea has sold me.

STi seats?

I wonder if Rick has any more of his fiberglass/wood STi underseat sub boxes?

I actually have two eD 6.5"s in my car and I did test fit and noticed they fit under the passenger seat just fine... almost broke out the fiberglass and started building a mold of the floor/chair rails on the spot

I do plan to disassemble a wrx seat some day soon to steal the rails from it and use them to template a box using all of the air volume available under the seat...

...but...but...that's where my amps go.

Nice job. That's one benefit of the low Qts sub designs ED makes, tiny boxes.

With the box at this size the seat moves freely. You can pull the sub in and out. If I did it over again I would probably make it a 1/2"-1" shorter in length (if you stuff it with fiber fill you should still have enough volume). I love it though. Sorry no side shots right now. If I take it out again I will take more pics.

Alpine amps certainly don't get excessively hot. The PDX amps are the hottest-running of theirs that I'm familiar with (think power per sq. inch) and mine run FIIIINE under the seats. Keep in mind that they share the same climate as you, as opposed to the trunk, so are going to remain cooler under there than in the trunk

You're concerned about the weight of carpet but built an MDF box... (penny-wise/pound foolish??)

Fiberglass FTW... save weight AND space...

I definitely don't think PDXs are their hottest running amps. They are Class D so they should run cooler than most Class A/B amps. I have a PDX-5 under the seat of my EVO and I drove ~8hrs with the stereo loud and the amp was still cool to the touch. I do have small AC vents under there, so that probably helped.

Thats pretty sweet, I'd heard the factory sub wasn't much to speak of so I wanted to do a little something more. Thanks for the info and pics.
