Default Kartboy shifter- umm can't get new shifter seated AT ALL, help?

I just went out to install the Kartboy short shifter. There's still grease left in the seat area where the shifter ball goes, but after 25 minutes of pushing with all my strength and slamming with a rubber mallet, the ****ing shifter won't go in at all. Yes it is the right model shifter and yes it's plenty greased up. What the hell!?!?! I haven't seen one search result with someone else who had this problem...can you let me know what else I can try? I used all my force, which is plenty and it won't go. I need this is NOW cause I need to pick someone up in a few.

Dude I am 100% serious, I can't get this in and I need to drive the car now and tomorrow! Can someone please tell me something that might work? I don't have any more grease to add on and I have tried everything. I almost passed out from putting all my strength into pushing it in...why is it doing this???? I've banged it with the mallet as hard as I possibly can a thousand times in a row. I even tried prying apart the plastic surrounding that is stopping it with a flathead while pushing the ball in. I'm freakin out..

Ok yeah, stop prying your car.

Get a good deadblow hammer. This is what I did. Pushing on it isnt going to work so stop trying. Get a ride or have someone go buy you a 5 lb deadblow and itll probably take 1 smack. Dont use a metal hammer or you can damage the threading.

Block of wood and a big hammer. Put the wood on the shifter and hit it hard with a large hammer. If you really can't get it, wipe off the grease, you'll see a snap ring, take that out pull the plastic part out, put it on the shifter, put it all back in and reinstall the snap ring.

Wow sorry for freaking out guys..I was really losing it cause it wasn't going in no matter WHAT, and I needed to pick up my gf and need to drive 35 miles to work tomorrow, etc..and can't do that without a shifter!!

But anyway, nothing was working. I was about to get a ride out to get more lithium grease and whatever else I could find, but at the last minute I read kevin's post above, grabbed a giant screwdriver and tried pushing the shifter down with the sd in the ring hole. It was still wasn't going in no matter what, so I placed the flathead of the sd underneath that silver plate in the upper left corner of the shifter area (you can see it in his pics..the flathead is actually under that corner I am referring to in his first pic lol) to use as leverage to push the shifter down. After trying with all my possible strength, it finally popped in!

Oh man I was scared for a moment. But it went in, nothing broke, and now my shifts feel awesome, especially with a brand new clutch that I got in today. Couldn't be happier for now. All that's left are the front and rear Kartboy bushings that will go in soon.

Thanks for the help all. Maybe this can help someone else someday. I couldn't believe I didn't see one thread or Google result about someone else having this issue!

I'm telling you, no form of hitting the top was coming even close to getting it in..rubber mallet, actual hammer, even me slamming the ball down from high up hahaha....nothing except what I described above. I also tried screwing my stock shifter on and then hitting the top of that.
You really need leverage to push down as hard as inhumanly possible. I'm sure more lithium grease wouldn't have hurt either. I was actual using wd-40 and vasoline at one point b/c I has no other ideas!!! LoL

the guy who installed mine used the hammer and wood block method. It didn't really want to go in, he even snapped the block once. And watching this was a bit unnerving. But he did eventually get it in.

Glad it worked out, you were freaking probably.

Thanks, I absolutely was. I'm still a little nervous because I was really prying at those white surrounding pieces to make them flex a little...I hope I didn't damage anything or the rubber boot thing around it. ****in' POS lol. I can't believe there couldn't have been a simpler design...

Once it's in..is there any reason to worry about lack of grease on there? Or will it most likely be able to move freely just fine from now on? It wasn't slopped on like it probably was at one time and some came off while switching shifters..

I'm expecting a new Kartboy shifter in the mail over the next few days and really enjoyed this thread!

Definitely gonna try the pry bar technique, don't feel like beating on the tranny too much.

A local forum dude told me had similar issues with a deadblow, and finally grabbed a 10 lb weight to set on the shifter and then used the deadblow to hammer on the weight, and it slipped right in. Seems like a lot of pressure is a good thing, then the final shove.

I had a bit of trouble getting mine in too, it's definitely not as simple as "oh, just give it a whack to seat it". I couldn't get it in via rubber mallet and ended up putting a block of wood on it and then slamming a 25lb barbell weight down ontop. Go figure, I quickly found out that the a**hole who sold me the shifter failed to tell me that it was the factory short-shifter style and not the standard-shifter style. So it didnt fit and I had to reinstall my stock one

i've installed about 5. 2 with a rubber mallet and no problems. 3 and i kid yo not, ratchet to cover the threads and an 8lbs sledge. sometimes you need a really alot of force to seat them.
anouther method i just heard about is to remove the little plastic bushing. once it's out there's no pressure onit so the shifter will just slid into it. then it pops in place.

Wow, some people have alot of issues getting these shifters in...

I've done 2 myself so far... in my wrx and a friends rs...

I used my stock shift knob, and screwed it onto the kartboy lever... and used a regular hammer, and beat the piss out of it, about 2-3 times, and it just popped right in place...

That screwdriver trick is genius though!... I will definitely try that one the next time I pop one of these badboys in a car.!

It would have worked anyway, just add washers as spacers on each side of the bushings.

Wow, I guess this is another reason to love the STi trans. Just did my short throw this weekend, took the white plastic cup out, put it on the new shifter and simply popped it back in place... didn't even have to press hard.

Now getting the snap ring out on the other hand...
