Alright, so it goes like this, I had a 04 pathfinder for a d.d. and a 04 cobra for a "toy". I found a 08 STi I wanted that was used and decided to sell the pathfinder and use the cobra as a trade. I was doing this to consolidate down to one vehicle and to actually purchase a "nicer" place to live. Anyway, the pathfinder sold and the deal on the cobra for sti fell through.
Now, I am stuck with a 04 cobra and a 96 jeep cherokee that will not make it through winter. With all that being said, I am considering 4 cars, 3 of which are in the same "category". New 2010 sti, 2010 evo, 2010 wrx, and finally, yes actually a truck....the 2010 raptor. The raptor is last on my list, i just threw that out their because the vehicle interests me. The evo is on it because I can get one pretty much for $3k more than a 2010 premium hatch wrx because they just are not selling. But, what I really want is a subaru. The sti, well come on its a sti. Where I get confused is, whether or not I need the sti. I wont do anything with it other than use it as a daily driver and if I have nothing better to do one day maybe just maybe auto-x it. But it is a want and coming from a 500hp cobra, once modded the STi might curb my appetite for speed. This is where the 2010 wrx hatch comes in, saw one today and loved the look of it in person. Would def. take it stage 2 as soon as possible and throw some suspension pieces on it. Because afterall, I'm left with about $10k to play with if I choose this. Price, not being a option between the wrx or sti, just the fact of whether or not I will strive for a sti once I have a wrx like I did previously. I just dont want to get something I am not impressed with. I went from a 2005 stage 2 wrx to a stock 06 sti and was NOT impressed with $ per smile upgrade. Actually the only car that I miss is my 2005 stage 2 wrx. With all this drunk rambling being said, and sorry for the long read. I just dont know what to do but I do know that I need to act quick because I am going to become immobile this winter here shortly. J also know that it is now time to move further in my life and living in NW Indiana a 5oohp rwd car is completely impractical. Now, I know most will say, get the sti if money isn't a option. But, there is about a $200 per month difference and then their is the maintenance. I just dont know which car to purchase. Ultimately it is left up to me and whatever makes me happy. But gone are the days of having the "best" car, now are the days of having the nicest house and a good looking car.

why dont you buy a slightly used sti? save money in every area
but sounds to me like you wouldnt mind just getting the wrx instead of the sti. but since my dad owns 3 cobras and i love them.... id buy a used sti for a d.d. and keep the cobra. get rid of the jeep. |

I vote EVO or STI. But you can find 2010 evo's for below 30k brand new (27k lowest)

RAPTOR!!!! A foot of travel in the front and rear. Some ridiculous power amount. This thing will take you anywhere.

I'd say go with the wrx especially since now they come with 265hp...and your probably right if your going to stage 2 the wrx and add suspension then go test drive an STI your probably not going to be impressed with it. Stage 2 + suspension will be more than enough to make your WRX compete with the stock STI excluding some of the extra goodies offered on the STIs. Save the 10k for other things and just get the wrx stage 2 and call it a day.
Getting an older STi/WRX is always an option that will save you even more money and still probably be just as satisfied, but if your going new then WRX would satisfy your subconscious. Good luck with the purchase. |

I would not want to purchase a wrx or STi used. Sorry, there is just some sort of stigmata behind it. Trust me, when I found this used one (the 08 I was going to buy), the guy pretty much didnt ever even drive it, had all records for anything and everything done to the vehicle. I am talking even gas receipts. He just happened to trade it in and when I found where it was traded it only had about 5 more miles than when he traded it.
As said before, purchasing a wrx or sti used and keeping the cobra is out of the question. I only want 1 vehicle, I do not want 2. I also want a BRAND NEW vehicle now. Something that has only been mine and bastardized by me. I loved my 05 wrx and its the only car I've ever missed, I bought it brand new. I also bought my STi brand new, I always say let some other idiot take the hit. However, the feeling of being the sole owner at some point in time might just be worth the initial hit. The thing holding me back from the raptor is even if I got one at invoice, we are talking $42k otd for a truck that is not a diesel and has nowhere near the power of one. That and....well...... $42k for a truck, lol. But, one thing to point out, as far as payment and insurance goes. The STi will have the lower car payment but will have the higher insurance. When you compare the diff. between the 2 the raptor actually ends up being about $30 cheaper a month (I have a reckless driving on my record). Does anyone else remember when a truck was the cheapest vehicle you could buy? God damn asphalt cowboys. Why didn't I like my previous 06 STi? Well there is a story behind it. But, all together. I just didnt feel it was worth the price increase vs. my stage 2 wrx w/ some suspension on it. But, always wanting the "best" and seeing others makes one want, and if the means are their. It's like why the hell not. Right now, I would like to purchase before this Sat. and I am in the mode where I am trying to talk myself into buying the wrx because well, its the more sensible and grown up decision. Because afterall, it is more than capable of doing anything I want to do with it. But then, you have the other side that is like, you can afford it, buy the STi (but seriously, wtf would I do with the thing?). Then, you have the side of me that is like, you can get a evo, yes a brand new evo, that is pretty much fricking awesome except for the fact its a mitsu. For the same price as a wrx, I mean, what a deal and they dont "pop" their motors. They also handle awesome, but, once again, they are a MITSU. Which I have never owned one but have known a few people who have and they have had nothing but trouble with them. Also with the evo if its not what I want, I know I will not be happy. Then the raptor, this thing in one word description, intense. But, is it worth $42k dollars? I mean, it only has a payload of 900lbs and can only tow up to 6000lbs. First model year and never been proven yet. Last edited by RexisMe; 10-15-2009 at 05:07 AM. |

I think you'd be silly to not at least look at some of the incredibly, incredibly low miles STIs/WRXes out there. The price difference between "lol 5k miles" and "lol 5 miles" can be like 10 grand or something.

Don't buy the raptor i really don't see that decision being better than buying a wrx/sti/evo. Buy the evo then not only can you get like 100whp with an exhaust and tune but their engines are supposed to be iron forged or something? correct me if im wrong people. And if its the same price as WRX then i dont see why not. At this point i dont even know what you want...you dont want to get a WRX b/c their is an sti out their that might be better? Forget the sti if your trying to be responsible and grown up then it shouldnt matter if their is a car out their that MIGHT be better than yours. Remember you get to keep 10k in your pocket with the WRX right?

Evo X 5 speed. If you can get it for that price do it. You'll already have one of the best suspensions. Simple bolt ons and you can push upwards of 400 to the wheels. There ridiculous. Some guy was running 11's with bolt ons untuned.

In response to a couple posts above. It's not because there will be a better sti out their. Someone always has something better. It is the fact that the STi can be afforded. But, I am trying to talk myself out of it. Because I see no use for the car. It is more of a want, but I do NEED a vehicle.

Based on what you're looking at you'll find a use for the STI, just remember to leave some money out for snow shoes.

I bought an 04 WRX new and took it to ST2. Loved the car and still miss it. I have an 07 STI (stock) that is hands down a better car than the WRX. I am not sure why you liked you WRX more, there is little to nothing to like better about a WRX other than the price. It is just a better all around car that 10k can not make up for.
I drive about 4500 miles a year. I never bring my STI to any track and I dont beat on it. Even though I dont use the car to it's potential I would still rather have it for the spirited driving abilty. With all that said, you should buy the WRX. The montly on an STI is large, even if you have the money. You will have problems with an Evo just like you could and maybe will with any Subie, plus I am not a fan of the Evo although it does look quite nice. A new WRX will have great power, great cost, great upgrade possibilities and a fun car for all DD condition you will run into. |

If you're buying a new car that you plan on keeping for a while, I say get the STi, although I personally would get an Evo, if it's not what you want, you're just going to be upset about it later. IMO, the STi is too superior to the WRX to pass up if you can afford it and still be getting a better house.

Buy the STI. If you have any desire to ever go big power on this new car, you need an sti. Buy it for the trans and save yourself so much money and hassle in the long run. Plus, the Brembo's are almost perfect. Not to mention the fact that the engine can handle a ton of abuse. Buy the STI, throw an exhaust on there and a gt30 rotated or dom three with some injectors and a fuel pump. What's not to like about an almost 400whp daily driver that you can use all year round?

Can the motor in the new stis really handle that power though? With the issues the sti, even the wrx seem to have as far as the ringlands. I feel I won't mod either and if I did I would be worried every day I drove it.

10 wrx....consumer reports rated it higher than the 10 evo gsr. so to me thats the best value for your dollar.
