Default waste gate flutter

would an up pipe leak make the normal turbo spool up whine have a small little tick in it? it sounds like whiiiiiiiiiiiitifiiiiiiiiiiiitifiiiiiiiiiitifiiiii iine? but really fast? or is that what a waste gate flutter sounds like. searched both topics but no straight answer. and yes I read the unibomber page on waste gate flutter.

In my experience, wastegate flutter occurs when reaching max boost as the wastegate tries to control your boost, not before. Sound clips or more info would be good, but I don't think you're describing WG flutter.

ill try but it is kinda quiet and dosnt do it the entire time its spooling. maby this will work. It sounds like an exhaust leak, i.e. that speed of a tick and everytime it ticks the whine stops for that split second. kinda like whistling into a fan.

maby to 'cause im anal about my car. I drive around with the with no tunes so I can listen for stuff like that.

Not to highjack, but on the highway cruising @70ish, is a catless up-pipe pretty loud? I dont think it's the transmission, more or less something that either has to do with the manifold or the up-pipe with turbo spool, even if it's out of boost.

1. Are you on internal wastegate still ?

2. Is it cracked ?

The turbo and WG are all stock. The noise is pretty faint but I notice it.

It's not wastegate flutter. Not sure what it is, but what you're describing isn't wg flutter.

thank you I read that before posting. The thing is that makes is sound like you get an audible hiss about once a sec. mine is alot faster.

Well at full boost I would say its 2-3 times a sec.

Here is the thing.

Unless you just installed the parts and it started right after, then its highly unlikely that its flutter. It isnt something that randomly starts.

Up pipe leaks typically dont make a noise like you are describing either, they make a constant noise, when you are on the gas hard.

Its hard to tell man.

Do you have a boost gauge? What is the boost level doing?
(if you dont have a boost gauge, GET ONE. Even if its the $54 autometer from autozone. Its a turbo car, it should have come with one from the factory @companies that sell turbo cars without a boost gauge)

I'll try to post a recording of my wastegate flutter later today. It's very pronounced. Again, it really occurs at WOT once you've hit full boost, as the noise is the wastegate trying to control your boost. It doesn't happen on spool-up, I don't believe.
Get a recording if you can. Even if it's a quiet noise, try to record it. And find a way to log or get some feedback from your system.

Yes the car has a guage in it. Stock I think. It boost good up to about .05-.06 then just holds there. it dosnt seem to waiver back and forth or fade off. It is definately alot faster then 2-3 times a sec. and it comes in when you get that nice loud turbo whine (the good kind) and only for a few sec. like if I hold at say 2800rpm I get a good whine then I slowly give it throttle then the whine picks up and I hear it very faint, almost like an exhaust leak mixed with the whine. but it all sounds like it is all coming from the turbo. Also this happens from about -.02 to .02. Please let me know if Im not making any sense

ive got something similar when accelerating from 1700-2500rpm but above that its gone. also, in the same rpm range when the vacuum goes to roughly -10hgmm i hear the turbo whine a bit.

When I replaced my DP, I too, notice this very noise. It sounds like an exhaust leak, but I can't find a leak anywhere. Only happens at lite throttle. Open it up, and all I can hear is boxer, no ticks. I assumed it was because the DP is a thinner material, you could hear the ticks. Kinda like a header.

Ya I heard the same thing with catless UP and aftermarket DP.

On another note, how can you tell if your turbo is on its way out? I still get good boost but I don't hear a high pitched whine anymore

Internal waste gate, and no crack if you were referring to me.
