CN's: Inside line used a Civic Si to test Snow Tires vs. All-Season vs. Summer. Snow tires are best in snowy condidtions, and summer tires are best in the wet and dry conditions, All-Seasons are OK everywhere.

What a giant ****ing waste of time that testing was. Tomorrow I am going to go out and test to see what gets me more ****ed up...a beer, a joint or a syringe full of heroin...

Probably the most interesting thing from the article is how much better the summer tires are in the wet than the all seasons, but that would probably change if the temperatures were around 40 degrees instead of 80+.
And also shows how much better the snow tires are on the snow than the all seasons. |

Snow, dry or wet pavement. Is that it? The more useful information would be intermediate Winter conditions such as slush (wet snow), heavy frost, ploughed surfaces, ice, heavily salted surfaces and so on.

This..and with maybe some limited brand testing as budget would allow. The big names such as Hydro Edge, Triple Tread, Nokia WR etc.

I think the interesting part of this article is this quote:
Quote:
and here's my over-analysis of it: People think that if you live in moderate climates (ie areas where it snows sometimes but isn't super cold, like NYC/NJ/MD/DC), you should still get snow tires on your awd car instead of all seasons. The problem with that is that for the 90% of the days in the winter months when it doesn't snow, you are riding around with compromised handling, and if you push the car, ruined winter tires. That's a cost/factor that people don't talk about or consider, but should. The other complication that this quote illustrates manifests itself in the decision between buying an car that comes in either rwd or awd variants (ie BMW 3 series, Infiniti G, Mercedes). In a car that comes in rwd or awd, I would choose awd in these geographic areas because with rwd, you almost need snow tires because all seasons won't cut it in a rwd car in the snow. And then you are stuck with compromised handling when it doesn't snow. This is in contrast with fwd where you can probably get by with all season tires in the winter in these moderate climate areas. |

All winter testing should be done on Michigan roads. We have slush, salt, potholes the size of your car, potholes the size of semi-trucks. We truly have the winter wonderland of roads here.

Also, on the bimmerforums, it is almost every day that a person posts a thread with "535i or 535xi?" or "328i or 328xi?" as the thread title, and rwd fanboys always chime in with "u don't need awd y0, just get winter tires" when that's not really the whole picture. |

Its always a compromise. I'd much rather be cautious enough to drive on winter tires in the dry than drive on all seasons in the snow. |

It is always a compromise, and I respect your preference. I think winter tires are too much of a compromise on dry roads. |

I think 'great compromise' is stretching it a bit here. I have driven around on snow tires for the last three years on my WRX. They handle just fine in the summer and dry conditions. The only time you are going to experience a difference is at the very edge of the limits of the tires. Which, unless you drive around like an ******* all the time, would only be under extreme circumstances or during emergency maneuvers. But being a some what skilled driver I don't feel that having snow tires on during the summer is in any way dangerous to me. Car control and vehicle dynamics > tread compound when it comes to everyday conditions. |

I have Goodyear Eagle RS-As on my car because that is what I felt like paying for at the time.
