Welcome to the forums and welcome to the 3g wrx world
I have a 2009 wrx myself. To answer your first question, you do not need winter tires if they are out of your budget but you will need all seasons. The stock 2009 wrx comes with dunlop SP tires. The SP stands for summer performance. Although the WRX has AWD, if you dont have proper tires for the rain or snow, you will end up crashing your car.

If you want winter tires for your stock WRX wheels you would need to get 225/45 r17

It will be expensive. I suggest looking for a wheel/winter combo
I got 2004 WRx wheels with winter tires for 400 cash. I painted the wheels gold and im putting them on the car today. I should have pix in a couple hours. PM me if you want pix.

I'd rock 205's instead of 225's on a winter tire, the narrower the better for cutting through that snow/slush

Clearly they aren't, I'm sure the 'SP' stands for something other than 'Summer Performance' as the other person stated.

Tire Rack has this note for your WRX:
Quote:
TPMS: Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that requires a sensor to be installed in the tire and wheel assembly for proper operation. Depending on wheel selection, sensor may or may not be available. Your options will be displayed in search results.

WARNING! Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that requires a sensor to be installed in the tire and wheel assembly for proper operation.

The original sensors from your original wheels can be used or you may purchase sensors from Tire Rack.

Your system includes:

315MHz Tire Pressure Sensor
$128.00 for a quantity of 4

Optional Metal Valve
$16.00 for a quantity of 4

ATEQ TPM QUICKSET RESET TOOL
$135.00 for a quantity of 1

Total Price: $279.00

Additional Information

If you purchase a Tire & Wheel Package when you buy new sensors, the sensors will be installed on the wheels at no additional charge. Otherwise, you will have to arrange for installation by a trained technician after your new wheels are shipped to you. Tire Rack's Recommended Installers are available to help you with your installation needs and can be selected by ZIP Code in the shopping cart.

Once installed, you will need to read your vehicle's owner's manual to review the proper procedure for allowing your vehicle to "recognize" the new sensors.

LM-25 disscontinued. great tire, probably find it somewhere online for cheap. ihave 09 wrx hatch , got the LM-60s . good on dry, ehh ehh on wet. waiting for snow.

stock 2009 wrx tires are SUMMER PERFORMANCE TIRES . idc what sp stands for doesnt matter if ther rated as all seasons or snow tires, they are summer tires , nothing more. 1/4 inch of snow and ur ****ed. sure awd will get u goin . but wen u gota stop or turn , aka driving ur car out of ur driveway....then it becomes a huge problem.

get snow tires. all seasons r a waste and silly excuse for a snow tire

ok, so is that a tire you would recommend? The winters here can be rough so I want a good tire but it also may rain here in the winter so that is something to think about also

i have posted in the winter thread:

The winters can get bad, the snow can be packed on the road, ice underneath, also could be a lot of mix of snow/rain with slush. The snow could be fresh and not plowed too.

We can have a Snowy winter 2in snows or 15in snows, or ice storms, or 60 in the middle of jan.

There are a lot of tires that can fit 225/45/r17

Michelin X-Ice Xi2,Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3, Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60, Bridgestone Blizzak WS60

Can you help me narrow it down?

I'd wait for Luke's response in that thread, he is certainly an expert on the subject of tires.

My opinion: one of the so-called 'performance' snow tires (like the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D) would probably be just fine for you (especially considering that you have AWD), but one aimed more at the snow/ice performance end of the spectrum might be a better buy for you, especially since I see that you live in NH. But again, I'd wait for Luke's feedback.

WS-60 is a snow tire and has very bad handling characteristics on dry pavement. also will wear out very quick

LM-60 is a performance snow tire . great on dry pavement and great in snow slush w.e the case my be.
i am recomending the lm-60 as i have hated the ws-60 on another car .

i allready told you nokian hakapelita studded . $1000 a set but i enjoy not smashing into a tree while avoiding wildlife on unplowed roads. i threw them on my stock wheels and got a second set of wheels for my summer rubber.

I have the LM-25's on my 04 WRX and i LOVE them. I am in CT which has similar winters to you and they work amazing. Poblem is as you prob found out they dont make them anymore. I think the WS-60 is the only other option for Blizzak but they wear quickly. Also they cost a bit more then other snow tires.

welcome

I would agree for a snow tire but not for a winter tire. If it's just a winter tire (not going to be used for snow rally or somesuch) for driving around the city, I'd stick with stock sizes. You probably don't want extra wide but certainly 225 isn't that.

Agreed, and most snow tires run on the narrow side when compared to a typical summer performance tire.
