Default Dark City vs The Matrix (revisited)

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236037

I flipped past The Matrix today and realized it was ten years old. I think it's aged decently for a Sci-Fi film but it's two less then great sequels have dented it's appeal.

Seemed like an excuse to revisit a question I put to OT many news cycles ago.

So which is the better movie, Dark City or The Matrix?

I think they are both really good. Matrix definitely has more viewers out there, wins popularity vote i am sure.

They really, really, really should not have made those sequels.

They are both good movies but I've always like The Matrix a bit better.

The Matrix = visually cooler and more 'wow/woah'

Dark City = a better story and better directed movie

Matrix >> Dark City.

I thought The Matrix was extremely unique at the time and well done, except for the stupid human being = battery, violation of thermodynamics bs.

Dark City I thought was a terrible terrible movie. I couldn't help but make fun of it the whole way through. It would have made a better Broadway play where it's extremely low budget set design and cliche' dialogue would have been seen as cutting edge (or something).

Don't bother. Love it or hate it The Matrix is an iconic movie, the harbinger of a new generation of special effects. Dark City is a sad joke in comparison, I'd send you the copy I mistakenly bought but I think I tossed it.

I'm a fan of both. Dark City has 'problems' that the presentation can't cover up well.

Matrix has either fewer problems, or I just don't notice them due to the style/presentation.

You mean that freeze-pan-around thing? Not sure that's something to be proud about..besides I think U2 used it first in a video.

Sorry if The Matrix Effect doesn't float your boat. I actually do prefer the Dark City Effect myself, oh wait...

special effects in general dont do much for me.

The super-slow motion gunfights are fun but by the time you reach the third movie and one starts all you can think of is, "how long until the movie speeds up again?"

In defense of Dark City it did have a wavy thought fight between two floating guys and an oscar wining actor floating into deep space.

Sadly there's way too much Keifer...

No I'm just being a smartass, obviously two very different Effects budgets going on. I just thought DC was too cheesy as a whole. It had potential but was very flawed IMO.

Nope it was actually used first in mainstream media in the GAP swing dance videos, I remember when they first came out on tv and went 'woah'

i hated dark city's story. the setting and the city itself looked cool but the ending was rediculous. maybe i didn't like it because i saw Brazil a year or two before that.
