I have an ipod and iTunes filled with 8k songs.
1. Can you connect a non-apple mp3 player to iTunes. They are cheaper. 2. If you cannot, is there another way to get the music from iTunes into a format that the non-apple mp3 player can read? 3. If I must get ipods, what is the best source for older gen nanos or something not crazy pricey since I'm expecting at least one of them to jack theirs up at some point.

I don't think so.
Some players will play AAC. For those that don't, you can use iTunes or another product to reencode in MP3. I like the Sansa Clip. Small, cheap, easy to use, great sound quality and durable. |

Go to apple.com and look up a 2gen refurbished mp3. You can find an Itouch or Nano for a good price there. FYI: my 15 year old daughter is smart, and she told me she wanted the new 3gen Itouch and not the 2nd like mine.
Yes that's her telling me. So if your kids are older they might want the newest one.Another place you can try is craigslist.com for finding a local used one. As for transferring your music, when you open your Itunes you can copy all your songs to a folder on your PC and add them to any mp3 player. Have a happy holiday! ![]() |

Yes, you could transfer from itunes to another form of mp3 player. It's not hard, but time consuming. You want to make a playlist, burn that to a cd, then rip the cd into windows, and transfer those mp3's over to the new player.

I was just in Target last night with my 9 year old who wants one. They had an mp3 for as little as $30. We've already gone through this with our older boy when he was 11 and it was destroyed within a month. So if your kid is not at least 13, buy whatever you want and expect that by spring break, it'll be trash anyways.

1: yes, you can.
2: drag and drop usually works with most of the inexensive ones. 3: look in the back of mac magaines at barnes and noble for the ads on refurbished items. some re likke $30 cheap for the first gen type stuff... however, also be aware most of that stuff was firewire, not USB2...yet itunes now needs usb to sync ipods....so make sure you have a port available, and the correct cables. |

Quentinberg, you just made my day with that link. I'm in the same situation with my kids. They love dads iPhone and want one of their own. I'm thinking shuffles instead.

Screw apple, there are plenty of other good MP3 players; Sansa, Microsoft, iriver, etc. I believe at Costco they are selling an 8 GB Sansa Fuze for 80 dollars. I have this, and I have to say its pretty damn impressive. FM radio, voice recording, FM recording, photos, and good music quality on top of that. I've also seen a deal for a refurbished 80 GB Microsoft Zune (2nd gen) for 129.99

Unless your kid is very different from mine...and every other kid I have ever met....buy the cheapest thing out there because it will be somehow destroyed by being left outside in the rain, sat on, dropped in a puddle, dropped in a lake, dropped out a moving car (this happened), taken apart to "see how it works", taken apart to "see how he can put music in it", or left on the floor to be chewed on by the dog.
If you are worried about your AAC files get a converter. It is kind of nice to have them in a non AAC format anyway. |
