Default Metal pieces found in tranny...should i be worried?

Im at 32k miles. just had 30k done.

I know that upon the first tranny oil change, it is normal for "metal shavings." but this is not shavings, rather tiny pebble size pieces cleary shows that its broken off (very sharp and rough to the touch).

This is my 2nd time changing the tranny fluid since new.

1st: 14,000 miles
2nd: 32,000 miles

my shop reccommended heading for the dealer. The car shifts fine, no weird stuff going on, seems normal. I just want to be cautious since im close to the warranty ending period, yet i dont want to jump the gun.

any experience, reccomendations, or comments?

thanks

GDA

Ugh, teeth. Those look like mangled teeth. I don't see how you could lose that many and not have problems. Does your car grind or click when you drive it?

Better get to a knowledgeable service department ASAP.

Sorry

Nooooo!!!!! AAAANNNNNDDDDDYYYYYY!!!!!

Get her to the dealer! ASAP!!! You need to de-modify your car, in a hurry!

I guess that I should change mine too. I am pretty sure that the 1st gear syncro in my ride is shot. I have to rev match to downshift...every time!

Call me foo!

I always thought the warranty for the transmission was 5 years/60k miles...you might have more time than you think. That is unless i'm wrong...anyone know for sure?

Holy Schiznit Batman... get thyself to the dealer. Hard to tell from the photo but those pieces looks like synchros that are starting to grenade, or gear teeth waiting to lock/jam your transmission. In either case that ain't right! Do you also have a chattering clutch problem (known Subaru clutch pressure plate defect)? Just had mine replaced under warranty (@ 51.5K) and I know that it secondarily caused problems with my 2nd and 3rd gear synchros which the dealer is going to fix as well.

Good luck,
Dale

The car drives fine, no extra noticeable noise or feeling. I mean it whines loudly when you depress the clutch but its still rolling in gear (but i have always thought that was normal for the awd system, drivetrain). I always rev match to begin with so it doesnt feel any more unusual, and downshifting is fine. As I stated before i do have difficulty getting it into first gear even at a stoplight sometimes, but ok other than that.

BADWRX-

im calling santa cruz subaru tommorrow to get down there asap (friday).

PM me your all your contact numbers so i can update from the (916) stuff.

thanks man,

GDA

from new to 14k miles: stock fluid
1st change:from 14k to 32k miles: Redline 75w90NS
2nd change: from 32k to today miles: Redline 75W90NS

i never had any problem with grinding, or crunching, or anything of that nature with the redline.

GDA

edit: so the synchro's are bronze? and that is not, haha, so maybe a gear? who knows, cars goin in to the dealer late next week.

If they are not synchros they are the teeth on the gears the synchros mesh with. Either way, I don't think you can buy synchros alone. So it dosent matter, they change one they change both.

If S of SC gives you a NO and "a $400 to open it up and estimate the damage and repair needed", let me know.

I can refer you to a dealer mechanic who on his personal time will open it up, fix it and close it back up for ~$150.

You pay for parts and your get the box out of your car.

Thats what I did. I did not want to put any dealer in a bad situation knowing that they know what I did with my car. I am very against trying to get SOA to cover my tranny under warranty if I am pushing over 60% more power to the wheels than OEM and generally drive like very "spirited". But thats just me.

In any event, my tranny was fine and needed just to be cleaned up and generally re-conditioned.

I paid $100 to re-assemble it (I disassembled it myself with the help of Joel and Gary, hehe, they did most of the worl ) and ~ $150 for new gasgets, RTV and few nuts.

Let me know,

-Alex

subietonic-

yeah i do have the clutch shudder thing going all the whole time, so i will bring that up also when i go.

alex-

thanks for that option, it might end up working out if i dont have any luck at the dealer. so $150 to open up, replace with my supplied parts, and put back together?

thanks for keeping yours open,

GDA

ps: anyone know how many man hours of labor the tranny calls for to be removed and reinstalled?

No it's not "haha," the syncro's are bronze. A lot of cars have bronze syncros, pretty normal. Steel riding on bronze is an excellent low friction duo.

The material you found looks like steel. It could be mangled teeth from a main gear or the smaller syncro mesh gear.

I would expect the bronze syncro to give way before the mesh gear, therefor I'd expect chuncks of bronze instead of steel.
