Default Footnote to the Friday Dinner and why you should invest in a skidplate

Yes, that's a tie-down strap from one of those very large flatbed trucks. For spatial relation, the width of the strap is four inches, and it weighs in at 14 pounds. I took that off the skid plate tonight at an estimated 75-80mph- the car lifted up when I hit the thing. Sean managed to straddle it, but I clubbed it (damn low car ). It sent sparks flying as it bounded back down route 495- 2 more of our party missed it, but it cause two tire fatalities- one to a Caravan type thing, and one to what I think was a small Chevy. I can't find a lick of damage though, save for some scratches in the plate... I thought the plate and/or oil pan was what was sparking back up the highway at first ! I'll find out for sure when I put the car on the lift tomorrow, but if nothing else, it made my exhaust rattle go away. I would like to thank my sponsor, Rumblesoft Racing, for allowing my oil pan to stay attached this evening . Moral of the story? Buy a damn skidplate kids .

I (being the one directly behind NU) would like to thank Rumblesoft as well, as it helped to propel the object into the next lane over, instead of towards my own vehicle, where it would have probably injured my car 100x worse than the first to hit it.

The minivan has a slightly bent rim, and I'm not sure about the other car, save the messed up front bumper, deflated tire, and possibility for an alignment soon.

That was just nuts. So when do we get the soundclip of the thing hitting the pavement from 4' up?

On the way home last night did you guys notice that all of the roads were hunting grounds for state police? I never seen so many people get pulled over at one time. Every town i went through from Nash to Durham, there was at least one person that got bagged.

Hey Kris- wanna trade ?

The front one took a glancing blow it seems, while the rear plate bore the brunt of the onslaught . It got very, very bent but kept the rear diff from becoming very very cracked.

The headers cracked (again)- you can see the old weld marks to the right of the cracks:

(I linked too many photos it seems...)

The resonator got a nice grove and hole in it:

And even the mount on the diff carrier for the skid plate bent:

I broke two of these nuts off trying to straighten them:

So now it's time to buy a new one... only $15 or so thankfully. At any rate, I really, really need a new set of headers- I'll take a set of 2.5 headers, or even WRX 2.0 headers at this point... we'll make a custom pipe and make them work . If anyone knows of any or has a set lying around for dirt cheap, please let me know. I have a neat object d'art, "Skidplate in Freeform" to trade for them !

North: I have my old set of headers if you want them. No cat attached, just the header pipes.

Maybe you should go aftermarket?

I can't afford aftermarket . If you have your old headers, I would be forever in your debt .

Sure, just steal me a rear O2 sensor and we'll be in business. Just kidding.

I'm probably going to need to replace that too, whenever I drive her hard at highway speeds I get ol' orange on for rear O2. And I'll be doing it myself, I don't need another $200 bill.

How do you want to go about picking it up? Tomorrow night I'll be home, I'm about an hour away from Exeter down 95. Go on IRC and talk to me about it.

At a lack for sounding like a complete pecker wad will the front skid clear the fumoto oil valve? And if it does, can I still get to it, and will the oil pour out the little hole in the skid for oil changes?

Cheers

The Rumblesoft plate leaves enough room for the Fumoto valve, yes... just changed my oil yesterday while I had the car in the air as a matter of fact . The drain doesn't get any oil on the plate, though you do lose a bit on the plate from taking off the filter.

Whoops, forgot to add: Phil, didn't see this until today . I can't get you one free, but I will give you 'the deal of the century' on it for your troubles and for helping me out . We can arrange pickup at some point .

Well, it appears that rumblesoft.com is down... Kris (webkris) is the guy to get them from (front or rear). Ken (kpratte) and Jim (fishguy) both seem to have them available for sale too .

What do they go for Brian?

I'd like to get a diff protector ASAP, then a front skid as well.

Cheers

Yes, Kris sells both for any year Impreza. I'll try to contact him, I'm not sure how much they run but I know the front plate goes for the $140 price range.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I just found out about this, from Brian. Yikes, what a mess! Yes, I am indeed quite glad that I have a Webkris-edition oilpan protector under my car.

'Tis my second. My first one got bent nearly in half after I rammed my car into a ditch in Bedford, NH in Dec. '00. The second plate, when my car was fixed, was my first purchase after I got it back from Eastern Auto Body in Manch-Vegas. (About four months later...thanks to Subaru of Manchester for being timely with parts supply ...)

Kris had to Dremel one of the mounting holes a fraction of an inch to get it to fit. Heh. Accidents'll do that to a car.

Glad everyone's okay with this incident on Friday, though. What's this about rear skidplates? You mean diff. protectors?
If so I have the OEM one. If not, I wanna know what you're talking about!
