Default DIN Pocket with Flip-up Door

Can anyone help me? I am going to install a Panasonic MP3 player in my '03 WRX Wagon and I need to know where to get the DIN Pocket with the flip-up door, so I don't have an ugly space under the single DIN unit. I have seen them on the Forester and Legacy and they are even silver like the trim around the radio and a/c controls on the WRX. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've installed the silver Forester DIN pocket in my WRX and it looks great. Especially with my Alpine 7995 head unit which is also silver, the two look great against the silver center console.

Only thing is, you will need to drill some new holes in the sides of the pocket, as it is not a direct fit in the WRX.

If I remember tonight, I'll post pics here.

OK folks, here are the pics of the Forester DIN pocket modifications/install.

First, here's the DIN pocket fresh out of the box:

Here's the side view. Red arrows indicate its mounting holes.

Unfortunately, these holes don't match up with the holes on the WRX's stereo brackets. So we need to do a little drilling. This image shows the rearward hole being drilled on the left bracket:

Don't "eyeball" the placement of the holes just based on these pics...they need to be precise if you want the pocket to be correctly aligned flush with the center console! I recommend test-fitting the whole assembly and placing it in the console multiple times until you get its placement right, before you start drilling!

This image shows what the left bracket looks like after both holes have been drilled:

I would like to have put the head unit below the DIN pocket, but due to the way the pocket is designed, the HU needs to be on top. So, put the whole thing together....

...and then put your center console back together, and here's what you get:

Closeup view, DIN pocket closed...

...and opened:

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions...

Dave

Hey Speck-

Noticed you're in the City...I'm in South City. Lemme know if you need any help with the install....

Dave

P.S. Saw your other post about the Pioneer DEH-4500. Don't forget to get the wiring harness that will plug right into the factory harness. Check with your install department at Best Buy...

I've got the Forester pocket in the same location; below my Pioneer HU. One thing I ran into in the install is that the bottom of the pocket was riding on top of the A/C and defroster buttons, which made the pocket bind a bit when opening or closing; so I dremelled a few mm off the bottom lip. Now it closes real nice!

Fragment -

I noticed the same thing when I first test-fit the pocket/stereo togther in the console, so I kept making adjustments to the position of the pocket until it fit perfectly -- that's why it's so important to do several "dry runs" before you start drilling the mounting holes! Obviously you were able to fix it by dremeling the lip, though, so kudos to you. In fact, dremeling that entire lip off will probably allow you to place the pocket on top, which is what a lot of people prefer. (I originally wanted it on top too, but I don't own a dremel, and at 2AM I didn't feel like taking my chances with my jigsaw.)

With my headunit fastened into the bracket, I aligned the pocket to fit right against the bottom of the headunit. I don't think I could have moved the pocket anywhere else except further back into the chasis. It didn't even occur to me that I had other options.

omg your interior looks SICK quasi

what HU do you have? Does that one do MP3s?

I've never done car stereo installation stuff before and I'd like to learn, but I could also have my guys at work do it for super cheap.

I'm debating right now. I installed my V1 radar detector myself and hard wired it. It was pretty fun and I was anxious to take some other stuff apart to see what I could do.

I've been building and repairing computers for years so I'm not really afraid of getting my hands into stuff, but this is my one and only car and I'd KILL myself if I messed something up.

I've got a couple of days until the DIN pocket arives at my dealer so I've got some time to think it over.

HOPEFULLY my rex will look as nice as yours on the inside. I've also got the MOMO shift knob on order but mine is the all leather one. can't wait till it's all done

SpecK:

That's an Alpine CDA-7995, and yes it does do MP3s. No internal amp, pre-outs only. (I have an Alpine MRV-F340 amp under my seat). About $350 new on Ebay. There is also the CDA-7894 (which has an internal amp) which is very popular, and costs less $ but has a black face instead of silver.

I *think* I used a 3/16" drill bit for the holes. As I recall, the first time I drilled it, the hole was not big enough, but moving up to 1/4" would have been too big, so I stuck with the 3/16" and went over it again and just wiggled the bit around to slightly increase the hole size.

If you drill new holes in the bracket for the HU, is there enough room for it to sit more flush mounted???

I can't decide if i want one of these, or a DVD screen....

You're referring to the Alpine? Yes, the faceplate does protrude out a bit, and drilling a new set of holes might allow you to set the HU back a little further. On the other hand, the distance required to make it more flush might be so small that you end up making the existing hole larger, resulting in a less-secure mounting point.

For most people (including me), I don't think it's worth the effort/risk...

well I bit the bullet and went for this deck
http://ecominet2.alpine-usa.com/img/asb/cda-9813.gif

Alpine CDA 9813. IT's a black face but I like the green on it. Plus it was 100 bucks cheaper than 7995. Crutchfield is cool too and lets you finance it interest free for 6 months. I've got a lot of money coming to me from tax returns and past pay raises from my job so I'll be in the clear in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully the black will look alright too

Yeah, I noticed that...but i'm more interested in the 7995. I don't think all Alpine HUs would have the same depth.

thanks for the detailed pics guys.

I'm confused by your question. They don't make this pocket for the WRX, it's from the Forester/Legacy. It's just a single DIN size pocket, I'm sure it would fit in ANY car.
