The decel noise, but in an 03?
OK - I posted this a while ago and got referred to some threads about the decel noise. I think I've read most if not all of the really big ones.
I have a little over 7K on the odo and at about 2k, I noticed that when I was in 2nd and decelerating, from about 20-15 mph I would hear two noises. The first is the usual transmission whining/winding down noise. The second is sort of a "sanding" noise - i.e. if you held a block of wood up to a belt sander. (not quite that vicious - but that "type" of noise if that makes sense) Not a "grind". I can also now hear it in 3rd at about 30 mph when decelerating, which is new - has been happening for maybe the last 1000 miles. I really wish I could record it - I might try with the digi cam later. I almost never listen to the stereo (only on the highways) so I feel like I'm pretty in touch with how my car sounds. This is my first MT, but I don't beat on it. I won't claim I was silky smooth for the first couple weeks, but I have focused on being smooth above all else. And usually when I screw up it's when I give it a little too much gas on the upshift, before the clutch is completely reenaged. It seems like a lot of people had wierd deceleration noises with the 02's but I see few if any people with 03's that have had this problem. Are you out there? Is this "normal"? I didn't hear it for the first ~1500k or so, and I don't think it suddenly started one day.. it's been a kinda gradual thing. And I hadn't heard it in 3rd until recently. And it's becoming more reproducible. If I'm just being paranoid I can deal with that. But my car is still 100% stock and I am going to keep it that way for the near future until my paranoid butt feels confident that everything's fine. (kartboy ss/bushing, engine/tranny mounts, definitely no power mods for a while) Thanks for listening.. -bd

Hey BD
I know we are talking different cars and different years, but my MY01 Liberty (Legacy) 2.5 5MT, had the classic MY02 WRX decel noise. This was finally fixed last year thanks to some help from some threads here on the decel noise. (That was the 3rd clutch and the second flywheel - including the original factory fitted units). I have since developed a known problem in the retrofit flywheel. The dealer has me booked in to have it fixed now that they have a fix available from Subaru. Its in to have its 3rd flywheel fitted on 14 May Talk to your dealer, maybe they can help, if not, contact SOA customer line and jump up and down til you get it sorted good luck Tim |

Thanks for you reply! I was beginning to wonder..
Have they ever determined what the source of the noise was exactly? And have any of the solutions to date made it go away? This gives me hope. I just need to reproduce it for the dealership tech guys. -bd |

Got it in mine. I don't worry about it since the noise doesn't hurt anything. Only slightly annoying.

If its the decel noise the dealer will know what parts (flywheel, clutch, bearing etc) to install to correct it. My Liberty (Legacy) had a new style dual mass flywheel fitted (the original was not a dual mass unit). It appears this same flywheel and clutch assembly is still being fitted to our Australian spec Impreza RS manuals and some have developed this same noise (on acceleration but only thru the friction point). This is why my Liberty problem is a known one. Hopefully this next fix will be the last fix I need. I still intend buying a new Liberty later this year once released Good luck |
